John Legend can add real estate GOD to his long list of accomplishments -- the singer just unloaded his NYC condo for a whopping $775,000 PROFIT. Yeah, we said PROFIT.

Legend bought the 1,359-square-foot East Village pad for $1.9 million back in 2009.

Unfazed by the real estate market, Legend listed the crib a few months ago for $2.9 million -- and made out like a bandit ... selling for $2.675 million, according to docs.

The place is sweet too -- designed by primo designer Andres Escobar -- it's rockin' floor-to-ceiling glass walls, awesome NYC views, rooftop deck and swimming pool ... where his fianc?e Chrissy Teigen probably swam half-naked.

That sale price makes sense now.

Everett woman fixes presidents' dishes for military recruiters

Published: Friday, February 22, 2013, 12:01 a.m.

EVERETT -- She's fixed a meal fit for a president.

Or presidents.

Each year on George Washington's birthday, Jody Harnish selects recipes from two cookbooks that focus on favorite meals of U.S. presidents. The history buff cooks up the dishes and delivers them as lunch for the people who work at the military recruiting office on Everett Mall Way.

On Friday, the meal includes Washington's favorite soup -- peanut. Actually, Harnish said, the soup recipe is from former first lady Rosalynn Carter, whose husband Jimmy was a peanut farmer.

The menu includes a ham dish said to be a favorite of President Martin Van Buren. A minted chicken loved by President Calvin Coolidge. And there is a grape salad attributed to President Andrew Jackson's wife, Rachel.

"It has to marinate overnight," Harnish said. "Because it uses pickles and mustard, and if you serve it too soon, it isn't so good. One thing I won't fix is FDR's moose meat with grape jelly. Yuck."

The desserts include President Gerald Ford's favorite strawberry mousse and first lady Jackie Kennedy's chocolate souffle.

"I had to stock up on cream for this year's meal," said Harnish, 55, of south Everett.

Marine Corps Sgt. Cesar Torres said he and the other recruiters look forward to Harnish's visits.

"She's an extremely caring person," Torres said. "She always tells us how thankful she is for our service."

Harnish, who grew up in a military family, said she felt an obligation to do something for people in the military even when she was a child during the Vietnam War.

"People talk about caring for people in the military, but do they really do anything?" she said. "My attitude is, 'If not me, then who? If not now, then when?'"

Harnish said the reward is a hug from the young men who come back for third helpings of her lunches.

"They love it and I love those guys so much."

NASA telescope spots smallest planet yet

Located some 210 light years from Earth, Kepler-37b is only slightly larger than our moon, making it the smallest planet ever discovered.

By Irene Klotz,?Reuters / February 21, 2013

This artist's illustration compares the planets in the Kepler-37 system to the moon and planets in our solar system. NASA's Kepler mission has discovered a new planetary system that is home to the smallest planet yet found around a star like our sun.

Astronomers have found a mini planet beyond our solar system that is the smallest of more than 800 extra-solar planets discovered, scientists said on Wednesday.

The planet, known as Kepler-37b, is one of three circling a yellow star similar to the sun that is located in the constellation Lyra, about 210 light years away. One light year is about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km).

"We see very large planets and they're uncommon. Earth-sized planets seen to be pNASAretty common, so our guess is that small planets must be even more common," said Thomas Barclay, with NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

The smaller the planet, the more difficult it is to find.

Kepler-37b, as well as two sibling planets, were discovered with a NASA space telescope of the same name, which studies light from about 150,000 sun-like stars.

The Kepler telescope works by detecting slight dips in the amount of light coming from target stars caused by orbiting planets passing by, or transiting, relative to the observatory's line of sight. The smaller the planet, the less pronounced the dip.

Of the 833 confirmed planets found beyond the solar system, 114 were discovered by the Kepler science team, according to the project's website. Nearly 3,000 more Kepler candidate planets are being analyzed.

Planets located in "habitable zones" around their host stars, where water can exist on their surfaces, are of particular interest. Water is believed to be necessary for life.

A planet positioned about where Earth orbits the sun would take a year to fly around its parent star. At least two, and preferably three or more, orbits are needed to confirm that a transit spotted by the Kepler telescope is indeed a planet and not a star flare or some other phenomenon.

Kepler-37b flies about 10 times closer to its star than Earth circles the sun, which gives it a surface temperature of about 800 degrees Fahrenheit (427 degrees Celsius).

"This particular one is nowhere near habitable," University of Florida astronomer Eric Ford said.

Mercury is the closet planet to the sun in our solar system, so scientists compared Kepler-37b to a mini Mercury.

The little planet, which is slightly larger than Earth's moon, has two somewhat larger siblings. Kepler-37c, which is slightly smaller than Venus, circles the trio's parent star in 21 days and Kepler-37d, about twice the size of Earth, orbits in 40 days.

The whole system would fit within the orbit of Mercury, which circles the sun in 88 days.

"When we first found exo-planets, they were all much larger than anything we have in the inner solar system. We didn't know of anything that was smaller. This is the first time we've been able to probe the smallest range, smaller than anything we have in our solar system," Barclay said.

The research was published in this week's Nature.

The rise of Chinese hardware, open source OSes and phablets: What's in store at MWC 2013

MWC 2012

With Mobile World Congress 2013 starting in just a few days in Barcelona, what's going to draw the crowds at the show this year?

Unlike in recent years, Mobile World Congress 2013 is going to be missing some of the big handset manufacturers. That's not to say there will be nothing of interest from the familiar names, but there will likely be less than in previous years; instead, I expect more focus to go on M2M communication, services and advertising issues around mobile.

NFC and mobile payments will be high up on the agenda too ??but I remain unconvinced that NFC payments will grow significantly until the ecosystem around it also grows.

Services aside, there will obviously be some handset announcements, and some notable omissions, but I'm not expecting an influx of surprise tablet announcements.

If anything, Ubuntu OS running on smartphones and tablets will likely be among the more exciting things to check out at the show. However, 'phablets' (oversized phone-cum-tablet devices) are likely to dominate, with several having already been announced before the show and more expected to land during it. ?

Samsung will be present on the show floor and is rumoured to be lifting the lid on an 8-inch Galaxy Note tablet device. It's worth noting that last year's big hit from Samsung (the Galaxy S III) wasn't announced at the show and there are few expectations that we will see its successor make an appearance in February.

HTC is another company that seems to be favouring holding its own events. It has already unveiled its new range-topping One handset, which should really have a different name to avoid confusion with the One S, One V, One X, One X+ or of course, the One VS. What's left to reveal at the event? We'll have to wait and see but HTC doesn't have a big press event going on at the show.

Similarly, LG has already announced its new high-end handset in the form of the Optimus G Pro, but is expected to roll out a fleet of other devices that slot in somewhere below the top end.

Sony, on the other hand, will be present and will be holding a press event to show off its latest wares that it hopes will take on the likes of Samsung and HTC.

However, while a lot of the big name manufacturers are choosing to skip MWC or have a minimal presence, ZTE and Huawei ? both of which have expressed an interest in becoming household names in the smartphone sector in Western Europe?? will have products to show off.

ZTE is planning to unveil at least eight devices, including multi-core, LTE-capable handsets, and Huawei will be planning to make a splash too, with handsets that could include the rumoured Ascend P2, suspected to have a whopping eight CPU cores. I'd also expect to see the company making a fair amount of noise about its upcoming Firefox OS-based device.

I'll be on the ground the whole gruelling time so you don't have to ??be sure to check back for our coverage next week.

FSA finds 29 positive horsemeat tests

LONDON (Reuters) - The Food Standards Agency said it had found 29 positive tests for horsemeat after demanding samples from UK retailers engulfed in a contamination scandal that is spreading across Europe.

The FSA on Friday said it had conducted 2,501 tests, 2,472 of which had come back negative for horsemeat levels above 1 percent, with 29 results testing positive for horsemeat levels above 1 percent.

It said all products that tested positive had already been announced and appropriate steps taken.

The FSA said it had asked the industry to test for horse down to a level of 1 percent as some laboratories can only test accurately to that level, and that it believed any level above that was not going to be accidental.

The FSA, which said that the majority of these results had been sent to them Friday morning, added that over 900 tests were still in progress and that the issue was "fast evolving".

The scandal, which has triggered product recalls and damaged confidence in Europe's vast and complex food industry, erupted last month when tests carried out in Ireland revealed that some beef products also contained horsemeat.

Canada To Zombies: Drop Dead, Eh

Apparently, the undead aren't even welcome in the ever polite Great North.

This week, Canadian Member of Parliament Pat Martin rose (from his seat, not a grave) to ask Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird if he is "working with his American counterparts to develop an international zombie strategy so that a zombie invasion does not turn into a zombie apocalypse?"

To which Baird replied: "I want to assure the member and all Canadians that I am 'dead-icated' to ensuring that this never happens. I want to say categorically to this member, and through him to all Canadians, that under the leadership of this prime minister, Canada will never become a safe haven for zombies, ever!"

This all came up because Quebec's public security department, as American preparedness planners have done before, is going to discuss a hypothetical (we certainly hope!) zombie attack at a safety seminar.

Zombies have been all over the news this week. There was Sunday's return of The Walking Dead on AMC. And then there was the news that some TV stations' emergency broadcast systems had been hacked and that a warning about "bodies of the dead ... rising from their graves" had gone out over the air.

Now there's word, according to the Great Falls Tribune, that "the hoax reached around 10 stations in Montana, Michigan, California, Utah and New Mexico, said Greg MacDonald, the CEO of Montana Broadcasters Association."

So far, we haven't gotten any comment from any zombies. Our friend Linda Holmes over at Monkey See might be able to.

Some Stunning Highlights Of St Lucia

When you have settled into your choice of the luxury hotels St Lucia has to offer, and you are ready to explore, your first question will be an obvious one ? where to begin? Whether you are on honeymoon or simply enjoying a relaxing holiday away from it all, it?s worth planning ahead and highlighting a few spots worthy of a visit on the island.

Here we?ve done some of the hard work for you and found a few suggestions you may want to look into as you discover more about this lovely Caribbean island.

Visit the capital of Castries

Castries may not be very big, but it is still worth exploring if you are staying in one of the luxury hotels St Lucia offers near the north western edge of the island. It has a harbour, albeit quite a small one, and offers an eclectic selection of restaurants and cafes to explore. Indeed there is no better way to spend a relaxing morning than to find a restaurant in Castries near the harbour, to enjoy a meal and a drink while watching the passing parade.

Explore Diamond Falls

The name alone sounds inviting, doesn?t it? When we add that Diamond Falls includes mineral baths and botanical gardens, it sounds even more unmissable. Diamond Falls refers to the waterfall renowned for its stunning colours. Its proximity to the Soufriere volcano is responsible for the unique colouring of the waters. It may not be the highest waterfall in the Caribbean, but it is certainly the most breathtaking.

Take a rainforest trail

Many of the luxury hotels St Lucia offers are in easy proximity to the island's spectacular rainforests. It goes without saying that you should book a spot on an organised tour ? rainforests are not for the faint of heart or the unaccompanied. You?ll learn plenty as you follow an experienced guide, and you?ll also get the chance to see more of the highlights in the area. Book your hike carefully ? some are more demanding than others, with climbs added into the mix.

Visit Marigot Bay

This must surely be one of the most familiar areas of the island for many. Within easy access of the many luxury hotels St Lucia offers, the bay provides a natural harbour with a sand bay that can only be reached by ferry. It?s worth the trip though, especially if you have a few hours to spare.

Wherever you decide to go on the island, make sure you are able to fit in at least one or two of the above suggestions. This Caribbean gem is a pure delight in so many different ways, and you?ll definitely want to come back for more.

About the Author:
Ross Stevenson is the General Manager of Cap Maison. With a reputation as the foremost luxury hotel on St Lucia, they provide a wide selection of services for those looking for luxury hotels, St Lucia as well as honeymoon options for couples who want to enjoy a blissful Caribbean experience.

Pope celebrates last public Mass as pontiff

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Beginning a long farewell to his flock, a weary Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his final public Mass as pontiff, presiding over Ash Wednesday services hours after a bittersweet audience that produced the extraordinary scene of the leader of the world's billion Catholics explaining himself directly to the faithful.

The mood inside St. Peter's Basilica was somber during the Mass, as if the weight of Benedict's decision and the finality of his pontificate had finally registered with the thousands present. The basilica erupted in a rousing standing ovation as Benedict exited for the last time as pope, bringing tears to the eyes of some of those closest to him.

"We wouldn't be sincere, Your Holiness, if we didn't tell you that there's a veil of sadness on our hearts this evening," Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Benedict's longtime deputy, told the pope at the end of the service, his voice breaking.

"Thank you for having given us the luminous example of the simple and humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord," Bertone said, quoting Benedict's words when he first appeared on the loggia overlooking St. Peter's Square after he was elected pope.

Smiling and clearly moved, Benedict responded, "Grazie. Now let us return to prayer" ? his words bringing to an end several minutes of thundering applause. Then, in a rare gesture and sign of respect, the bishops removed their mitres.

"Viva il papa!" the crowd yelled as the pope stepped off the altar, assisted by two clergymen, and departed St. Peter's aboard a moving platform to spare him the long walk down the aisle.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, the most solemn season on the church's liturgical calendar that ends with Holy Week, which commemorates the death of Christ and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. By this Easter, on March 31, the church will likely have a new pope.

The scene was festive earlier in the day, when Benedict took the extraordinary step of speaking directly to his flock about why he had broken with 600 years of tradition and decided to retire on Feb. 28.

"As you know, I have decided to renounce the ministry that the Lord gave to me on April 19, 2005," Benedict said, to warm applause. "I did this in full liberty for the good of the church."

He thanked the faithful for their prayers and love, which he said he had "physically felt in these days that haven't been easy for me." And he asked them to "to continue to pray for me, the church, and the future pope."

Benedict looked tired but serene as he basked in a standing ovation when he entered the packed hall for his traditional Wednesday catechism lesson. His speech was interrupted repeatedly by applause, and many in the audience of thousands had tears in their eyes.

A huge banner reading "Grazie Santita" ("Thank you Your Holiness") was strung up and a chorus of Italian schoolchildren serenaded him with one of his favorite hymns in German ? a gesture that won over the pope, who thanked them for singing a piece "particularly dear to me."

He appeared wan and spoke softly, but his eyes twinkled at the welcome.

"He gave us eight wonderful years of his words," said Ileana Sviben, an Italian from the northern city of Trieste. "He was a wonderful theologian and pastor."

The Rev. Reinaldo Braga Jr., a Brazilian priest studying theology in Rome, said he, too, was saddened when he first heard the news.

"The atmosphere was funereal but nobody had died," he said. "But then I realized it was a wise act for the entire church. He taught the church and the world that the papacy is not about power, but about service."

It was a sentiment the retiring Benedict himself emphasized Wednesday, saying the "path of power is not the road of God."

Benedict 's decision has placed the Vatican in uncharted waters: No one knows what he'll be called or even what he'll wear after Feb. 28.

The Vatican revealed some details of that final day, saying Benedict would attend a morning farewell ceremony with his cardinals and then fly by helicopter at 5 p.m. to the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo.

That means Benedict will be far from the Vatican when he ceases being pope at 8 p.m. ? a deadline decided by the pope himself because that's when his normal workday ends.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said no formal or symbolic act was needed to make his resignation official, because Benedict has already done all that was required to resign by affirming publicly he had taken the decision freely.

Benedict's final official acts as pope will include audiences with the Romanian and Guatemalan presidents this week and the Italian president on Feb. 23.

To assure the transition goes smoothly, Benedict made an important appointment Wednesday, naming the No. 2 administrator of the Vatican city state, Monsignor Giuseppe Sciacca, as a legal adviser to the camerlengo.

The camerlengo, or chamberlain, helps administer the Vatican bureaucracy in the period between Benedict's resignation and the election of a new pope. The current camerlengo is Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state.

He and the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, will have a major role in organizing the conclave, during which the 117 or so cardinals under the age of 80 will vote on who should succeed Benedict.

The Vatican has made clear that Benedict will play no role in the election of his successor, and once retired, he will live a life of prayer in a converted monastery on the far northern edge of the Vatican gardens.

His continued presence within the Vatican walls has raised questions about how removed he really will be from the life of the church. Lombardi acknowledged that Benedict would still be able to see friends and colleagues.

"I think the successor and also the cardinals will be very happy to have very nearby a person that best of all can understand what the spiritual needs of the church are," Lombardi said.

Benedict is expected, however, to keep a low public profile.

As a result, Benedict's final public appearances ? his last general audience will be Feb. 27 ? are expected to draw large crowds for what may well be some of the last speeches by a man who has spent his life ? as a priest, a cardinal and a pope ? teaching and preaching.

And they will also give the faithful a way to say farewell under happier circumstances than when his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, died in 2005.

Humanities Department offers new courses | The Trumpet

By Kim Rippeth, Staff Writer

For the Fall 2013 semester, the West Liberty Humanities Department will be offering a new class designed for non-majors to fulfill their general education literature requirement.

In the past, English 278 special topics classes were offered ?with the intent that they would be particularly attractive to non-majors,? said Humanities Department Chair Dr. Waller Hastings, ?but they haven?t worked very well.?

The new course is a literature appreciation class that is tentatively going by the course number English 202. Hastings said that this class will run in a similar manner as the music, art, or theater appreciation classes that are used to fulfill general education Fine Arts credits. The vision for the class is that it will cover selections of poetry, fiction, and drama from various time periods of both British and American literature.?

?We think it will better suit the needs of people who are finding themselves in English courses that they are not necessarily interested in,? Hastings said; however, if non-majors have an interest in a certain period of literature, they are still encouraged to take those classes.

He added, ?It?s not that we don?t want people who are interested in, say, Victorian literature in that class. By all means, take it.?

However, for non-majors who do not have an interest in any of the literature classes that are offered, this class will be a great alternative.

Hastings emphasizes the fact that this class is not intended to replace or phase out the special topics classes. In fact, a new special topics English class is going to be offered during the second half of the 2013 spring semester.

The class will be a three-hour course in fairytales taught by adjunct instructor Kristi Howard. According to Hastings, ?The class will be offered for two hours a day three days a week? and is a great opportunity for students that may have had to drop a class and still need a literature class to fulfill their general education requirements.

Students will need to get an add slip from the Registrar in order to register for the course, but any students interested in taking the class are encouraged to contact Kristi Howard at kristi.howard@westliberty.edu.

The Humanities Department has new classes that will be available for English majors as well.

Hastings said that for the last three years, the Humanities Department has been looking over the curriculum to see what kinds of things need to be changed and improved. One thing that they noticed was the lack of concentrated American literature classes.

?It was possible to teach more condensed periods of British literature,? Hastings said, ?but there wasn?t anything like that in American literature.?

This poses an issue for the English Education majors who generally are expected to teach a full year of American literature and a full year of British literature when they enter a typical academic system. To address this issue, the department has created four American literature classes that are currently in the course catalogue and will be offered in rotation beginning in the Fall 2013 semester.

The English Department is also in the process of developing a new graphic novel major in conjunction with the Art Department that will be going into consideration for approval this month.

?This program could be a recruiting tool for the university. People are interested in this subject,? Hastings said. If the program is approved, classes will hopefully be offered starting in the Spring 2014 semester. More details on the program will be available after the approval process is complete.

1.1 million flat panels shipped globally in Q4, but Chinese market sees huge drop

The flat panel market reached a total of 1.1 million units in Q4 2012, a flat performance on Q3, falling 4.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter, but growing 7.18 per cent year-on-year, according to the latest round of research from Futuresource Consulting. This performance hides the fact there was a strong performance from a number of brands for professional displays which experienced double digit growth quarter-on-quarter.

The EMEA region, without Turkey?s results had a strong performance with double-digit quarter-on-quarter growth.

The developing MEA region continues to show its potential with good sales in not only more established markets, such as Israel and Saudi Arabia, but in the emerging markets within North Africa. There were also positive signs in the Western European markets, with the majority of countries experiencing strong quarter-on-quarter growth.

The Asia Pacific region is dominated by the Chinese market, which saw a massive quarter-on-quarter drop of 28 per cent, following a particularly strong Q2 and Q3 for many domestic vendors.

The Korean market on the other hand has recovered well through 2012, after a poor start of 9,100 units in Q1, finishing with full-year sales of over 64,000 units to the benefit of the Korean based vendors.

Through 2012 the market saw a dramatic increase in the number of LED lit professional displays in the market, with full-year sales reaching 352,000 units, which accounted for 21.3 per cent of LCD sales, up from 4.7 per cent in 2011.

The pure professional display market saw a downturn, dropping 14.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter which was affected by the first phase of the Turkish education ending. However, the year-on-year performance of the professional display market at 2.7 per cent still had positive growth.

Larger screen sales (50in) experienced a significant increase in 2012, this category accounted for 30.1 per cent as opposed to 24.7 per cent in 2011.

Panasonic remains the key vendor in the large screen category, but year-on-year growth has been aggressive from competing brands. This trend is expected to continue through 2013 as vendors expand their product ranges and verticals moving towards more standardised flat panels.

Google bug returns porn for mathematical queries

A bug in Google search ? fortunately, a rare one ? gives porn links and images as results when the user puts certain mathematical equations into the search box. It's certainly strange, but there is an explanation.

It was discovered by a user of the Q&A site Quora, who wrote a question asking why the search "-4^(1/4)" should return not just the result of that equation but hundreds of links to a wide variety of porn sites.

The search still works, and you can try it yourself, although if you're at work, you might want to wait until the boss is out of sight. Results are similarly inappropriate with image search.

So what's happening here? Another user of Quora (who stayed anonymous to avoid being associated with porn by Google, clearly a serious risk) broke it down. Google calculates the numerical query as it should, but also runs it as a normal text search as well, just in case. When it does that, it interprets things differently: the parentheses act like quote marks and the negative sign is used to exclude unwanted words from results.

The end result is that Google tries to find pages that have a 1 and a 4 next to each other... but no 4s. Obviously there are no pages that both have and don't have a 4, and as Google search engineer Jeremy Hoffman showed up at Quora to explain, it should return no results.

Instead, the bug results in these porn sites being shown, which have been extensively optimized to show up on as many searches as possible, even unrelated ones. The optimization is so strong that porn is showing up even for queries that don't make sense! Other contradictory queries return porn results, but not all.

Google declined to comment to NBC News. But the Google engineer who answered the question says that a bug fix is on the way, so you can calculate on Google with no fear of smutty links clogging up your results.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC News Digital. His personal website is coldewey.cc.

Isotopic data show farming arrived in Europe with migrants

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

For decades, archaeologists have debated how farming spread to Stone Age Europe, setting the stage for the rise of Western civilization.

Now, new data gleaned from the teeth of prehistoric farmers and the hunter-gatherers with whom they briefly overlapped shows that agriculture was introduced to Central Europe from the Near East by colonizers who brought farming technology with them.

"One of the big questions in European archaeology has been whether farming was brought or borrowed from the Near East," says T. Douglas Price, a University of Wisconsin-Madison archaeologist who, with Cardiff University's Dusan Boric, measured strontium isotopes in the teeth of 153 humans from Neolithic burials in an area known as the Danube Gorges in modern Romania and Serbia.

The report, which appears this week (Feb. 11, 2013) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, draws on isotopic signatures of strontium found in the tooth enamel of people who died nearly 8,000 years ago, about 6,200 B.C. Strontium is a chemical found in rocks everywhere. It enters the body through diet at or around birth and etches an indelible signature in teeth that accurately documents the geology of an individual's birthplace.

"The evidence from the Danube Gorges shows clearly that new people came in bringing farming and replaced the earlier Mesolithic hunter-gatherers," says Price, a UW-Madison professor of anthropology and an expert on early agriculture in Europe.

The Danube Gorges slice through the Carpathian Mountains and in the Stone Age were a heavily forested setting, rich in fish and game, including huge sturgeon, catfish, red deer and wild boar. The bends and twists of the Danube in the Gorges region made it especially important as a source of fish, and thus potentially a desirable entryway to Europe for highly mobile and expanding Neolithic communities accompanied by their domesticates ? wheat, barley, flax, goats and cattle.

The new research, explains Price, speaks to the question of colonization versus adoption of transformative technologies such as farming. "It is also useful because it suggests another route across the Black Sea or up the east coast of Bulgaria to the Danube for farmers moving into Europe. This contrasts with movement by sea across the Mediterranean or Aegean, which is the standard picture."

Archaeologists have long wrestled with the question of how farming spread across Europe, ushering in a host of technologies, including the use of pottery, that ultimately led to the rise Western civilizations. Two big ideas have dominated the debate: Did the technology arrive with colonizers from Asia, notably Anatolia or modern Turkey? Or did the technology, including newly domesticated plants and animals, simply diffuse across the European landscape through networks of local foragers?

There is some evidence for the importation of early agriculture along the shores of the Mediterranean and in Central Europe, Price notes, "but elsewhere in Europe it is not clear whether it was colonists or locals adopting."

Isotopic studies of strontium and other chemicals found in the teeth and bones of Neolithic humans, however, are now helping archaeologists better track the movement of ancient peoples across the landscape. Strontium signatures last not just a lifetime, but potentially thousands of years as tooth enamel, the densest tissue in the body, resists decomposition and contamination after death. It is now commonly used by archaeologists to determine if an individual was local or foreign to the place where their remains were discovered.

An interesting finding of the study is that 8,000 years ago, when Neolithic farmers were beginning to migrate into the Danube Gorges and overlap with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, more women than men were identified as foreigners. A possible explanation for the variance, according to the study, is that women came to these sites from Neolithic farming communities as part of an ongoing social exchange.

In the Danube Gorges, the overlap of colonizing early farmers and hunter-gatherers lasted perhaps a couple of hundred years before the forager societies were completely absorbed by the beginning of the sixth millennium B.C.

Union lawsuit calls Michigan right-to-work law unconstitutional

DETROIT (Reuters) - Several labor unions filed a lawsuit in federal court on Monday, saying a Michigan law banning compulsory union membership for private sector employees violates the U.S. Constitution.

The right-to-work law, which goes into effect in late March, contains provisions that go "well beyond" the limits of federal law, said Andrew Nickelhoff, an attorney for the Michigan AFL-CIO, one of the unions that filed the lawsuit.

For example, the Michigan law allows for a $500 civil fine and the possibility of criminal liability for violators, which is not done under the National Labor Relations Act, he said.

"Our position is that so many parts of the right-to-work law are unconstitutional, that the court should strike down the law in its entirety," Nickelhoff said in an interview.

The lawsuit is one of three that have been filed challenging Michigan's right-to-work laws, which prompted protests of more than 12,000 unionized workers and supporters at the state Capitol in Lansing after it was enacted on December 11.

The AFL-CIO represents about 50 labor unions, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

The Michigan Building Trades Council, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Service Employees International Union are among the other groups involved in the case.

The defendants are the Michigan Employment Relations Commission, Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Director Steve Arwood, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

"The law is constitutional and we will defend it aggressively in court," said Joy Yearout, spokeswoman for the Michigan Attorney General Schuette.

Maria Miller, spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Worthy, said the prosecutor's office had not yet seen the filing and declined to comment.

Michigan, once a union powerhouse, became the country's 24th right-to-work state after Republican Governor Rick Snyder approved a pair of "right-to-work" bills covering public- and private-sector unions in December.

Monday's lawsuit does not cover the law affecting public-sector workers.

Vodafone UK warns its iPhone 4S users not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 due to possible 3G problems

Vodafone UK warning its iPhone 4S users not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 due to 3G problemsUK network Vodafone is warning users of iPhone 4S handsets on its network to avoid upgrading to iOS 6.1. Vodafone is sending out text messages to its users as well as issuing a statement that claims Apple is already working on a fix for the problem. Apparently it is only affecting iPhone 4S users and is an intermittent 3G problem causing failed calls and texts as well as internet access problems.

We?re aware of an issue caused by Apple iPhone 4s handsets that have been upgraded to iOS 6.1 which impacts performance on 3G.

Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.

While Apple?s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed.

We know that Apple has already released iOS 6.1.1 beta to developers for testing and maybe this contains the fix that Vodafone is referring to. As with any new release of iOS firmware there are always many differing reports especially when it comes to battery performance. This release has been no different in that respect however the fact that Vodafone felt the need to publicly comment on this particular 3G problem does mean it could well be a major problem for many on its network.

My wife actually has an iPhone 4S on the Vodafone network in the UK and it is updated to iOS 6.1. Her iPhone is working perfectly with no sign of any issues with 3G. If there are any other readers on Vodafone in the UK experiencing any issues, please let us know in the comments!

(AP) ? Emergency crews and residents struggled to clear roadways and sidewalks from a storm that rampaged through the Northeast, dumping up to 3 feet of snow and bringing howling winds that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands.

Municipal workers from New York to Boston labored through the night Saturday in snow-bound communities, where some motorists had to be rescued after spending hours stuck in wet, heavy snow. President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency for Connecticut, allowing federal aid to be used in recovery, and utilities in some hard-hit New England states predicted that the storm could leave some customers in the dark at least until Monday,

"We've never seen anything like this," said county official Steven Bellone of New York's Long Island, which got more than 2? feet of snow.

About 345,000 homes and businesses remained without power Sunday morning, down from a total of about 650,000. Some school districts announced they'd be closed on Monday, complicating parents' back to work schedules but giving kids another day for frolicking.

At least five deaths in the U.S. were blamed on the snowstorm, including an 11-year-old boy in Boston who was overcome by carbon monoxide as he sat in a running car to keep warm while his father shoveled Saturday morning. That death and the illnesses of several others exposed to carbon monoxide set off a flurry of safety warnings from public officials.

Roads across the Northeast were impassable and cars were entombed by snow drifts on Saturday. Some people found the snow packed so high against their homes they couldn't get their doors open.

"It's like lifting cement. They say it's 2 feet, but I think it's more like 3 feet," said Michael Levesque, who was shoveling snow in Quincy, Mass., for a landscaping company.

In Providence, where the drifts were 5 feet high and telephone lines encrusted with ice and snow drooped under the weight, Jason Harrison labored for nearly three hours to clear his blocked driveway and front walk and still had more work to do.

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee cautioned that while the snow had stopped, the danger hadn't passed: "People need to take this storm seriously, even after it's over. If you have any kind of heart condition, be careful with the shoveling."

Blowing with hurricane-force winds of more than 80 mph in places, the storm hit hard along the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor between New York City and Maine. Milford., Conn., got 38 inches of snow, and Portland, Maine, recorded 31.9, shattering a 1979 record. Several communities in New York and across New England got more than 2 feet.

Still, the storm was not as bad as some of the forecasts led many to fear, and not as dire as the Blizzard of '78, used by longtime New Englanders as the benchmark by which all other winter storms are measured.

By midday Saturday, the National Weather Service reported preliminary snowfall totals of 24.9 inches in Boston, or fifth on the city's all-time list. Bradley Airport near Hartford, Conn., got 22 inches, for the No. 2 spot in the record books there.

Concord, N.H., got 24 inches of snow, the second-highest amount on record and a few inches short of the reading from the great Blizzard of 1888.

In New York, where Central Park recorded 11 inches, not even enough to make the Top 10 list, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city "dodged a bullet" and its streets were "in great shape." The three major airports ? LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark, N.J. ? were up and running by late morning after shutting down the evening before.

Most of the power outages were in Massachusetts, where at its peak more than 400,000 homes and businesses were left in the dark. In Rhode Island, a high of around 180,000 customers lost power, or about one-third of the state.

Connecticut crews had slowly whittled down the outage total from a high of about 38,000 to about 25,000 Sunday, and power was restored to nearly all of the more than 15,000 in Maine and New Hampshire who were left without lights after the storm hit.

Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island imposed travel bans until 4 p.m. to keep cars off the road and let plows do their work, and the National Guard helped clear highways in Connecticut, where more than 240 auto accidents were reported. The Guardsmen rescued about 90 motorists, including a few who had hypothermia and were taken to hospitals.

On Long Island, hundreds of drivers spent a cold and scary night stuck on the highways. Even snowplows got bogged down or were blocked by stuck cars, so emergency workers used snowmobiles to try to reach motorists, many of whom were still waiting to be rescued hours after the snow had stopped.

Richard Ebbrecht, a chiropractor, left his office in Brooklyn at 3 p.m. on Friday and headed for home in Middle Island, N.Y., but got stuck six or seven times on the Long Island Expressway and other roads.

"There was a bunch of us Long Islanders. We were all helping each other, shoveling, pushing," he said. He finally gave up and settled in for the night in his car just two miles from his destination. At 8 a.m., when it was light out, he walked home.

"I could run my car and keep the heat on and listen to the radio a little bit," he said. "It was very icy under my car. That's why my car is still there."

Local police said Sunday that all known abandoned cars were searched and no one needing medical help was found. But A 27-mile stretch of the expressway remained closed in both directions so crews could remove snow.

Around the New York metropolitan area, many victims of Superstorm Sandy were mercifully spared another round of flooding, property damage and power failures.

"I was very lucky and I never even lost power," said Susan Kelly of Bayville. "We were dry as anything. My new roof was fantastic. Other than digging out, this storm was a nice storm." As for the shoveling, "I got two hours of exercise."

At New York's Fashion Week, women tottered on 4-inch heels through the snow to get to the tents to see designers' newest collections.

Across much of New England, streets were empty of cars and dotted instead with children who had never seen so much snow and were jumping into snow banks and making forts. Snow was waist-high in the streets of Boston. Plows made some thoroughfares passable but piled even more snow on cars parked on the city's narrow streets.

Boston's Logan Airport resumed operations late Saturday night.

Life went on as usual for some. In Portland, Karen Willis Beal got her dream wedding on Saturday ? complete with a snowstorm just like the one that hit before her parents married in December 1970.

"I have always wanted a snowstorm for my wedding, and my wish has come true to the max," she said.

In Massachusetts, the National Guard and Worcester emergency workers teamed up to deliver a baby at the height of the storm at the family's home. Everyone was fine.

Some spots in Massachusetts had to be evacuated because of coastal flooding, including Salisbury Beach, where around 40 people were ordered out.

Among them were Ed and Nancy Bemis, who heard waves crashing and rolling underneath their home, which sits on stilts. At one point, Ed Bemis went outside to take pictures, and a wave came up, blew out their door and knocked down his wife.

"The objects were flying everywhere. If you went in there, it looks like ... two big guys got in a big, big fight. It tore the doors right off their hinges. It's a mess," he said.
