Voice Over Web Protocol Or VoIP Is The Latest Innovation To The ...

Voice over Web protocol or VoIP is the latest innovation to the many years previous audio communication technologies. The IP telephony transmits voice, video clip and data over the broadband networks. The procedure of contacting over the VoIP is quite akin to a normal phone however, it utilizes higher-pace Internet service, which tends to make it all the more priceless. It minimizes per-minute contact as the technology is based on the packet switching method of the Internet.

IP telephony caters to the require of worldwide market by providing decrease rates for long length and worldwide calling. Functions like cost effectiveness, reliability, performance, security and scalability in IP telephony has produced it right choice for the ?next? Generation individuals.

For availing the advantages of VoIP calling, users must be equipped with an Internet services, ATA or Analog terminal Adaptor, a handset as well as an IP services. A VoIP contact is primarily based on the packet switching technology that converts the audio or analog indicators into little packets of digital data. These data is converted using Analog-to-Digital Converter or ADC. The digital packets are compressed into the established standard format and then routed more than the Web connection. These compressed digital standard packets absorb the noise on the way as a result, the packets get transferred quicker and more efficiently. Whilst routing more than the Web, packets are in compliance with standard communication protocols. The packets are routed more than the various paths when they arrive at the location, there is a re-conversion of the electronic packets to analog signals. These information is transformed utilizing Digital-to- Analog Converter or DAC.

These conversion and re-transformation procedure requires place in the real time and the finish users appreciate continuous speech flow without any delays. The services of VoIP are primarily based on the packet switching method, so contacting more than longer distance is produced easier and less expensive. Whilst opting for a VoIP phone or service, users must verify features like caller ID with name and telephone number contact blocking, contact waiting, three-way calling, call forwarding, and voice mail.

New material could lead to thin, flexible, wall-sized TVs

19 hrs.

Sheets of material commonly used as an industrial lubricant ? just one-molecule thick ??may usher in a new era of thin, flexible, and transparent electronics, according to a researcher at the forefront of the technology.

The material, molybdenum disulfide, is similar to wonder material graphene that researchers have been working with since 2004. Unlike graphene, the molybdenum disulfide has a property called a bandgap.

?A bandgap is the most important property for any material to be useful in electronic applications,? Tom?s Palacios, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told me Friday.

?A bandgap is the property that allows a transistor, which is basically a switch, to either let the current flow or stop.?

A working switch means researchers can use the one-molecule thick sheets of the material to build "a new generation of electronic circuits,"?Palacios added.

Examples of possible gadgets range from living?room?wall-sized TVs that sip electricity to cars or buildings covered in sensors. The material could be used to weave the antenna and other circuitry of a cellphone into clothing ? meaning you could essentially wear your phone.

The material could even be applied to glass, producing displays on an office window or eyeglasses.?

Asked if this was in line with the Google glasses concept generating buzz of late, Palacios said, "It would definitely help to implement that concept."

He is particularly excited about the potential of the material to serve as a?supremely sensitive chemical sensor. Since the current flowing on the device is at the surface, anything that happens at the surface is going to affect the current.

"We are working on chemical sensors with molybdenum disulfide that should have much higher sensitivity than conventional sensors," he said. "They should allow us to detect single molecules of a given chemical component."

One could imagine that would be useful for anyone concerned about the spread or use of chemical weapons, for example.

Before any of this is possible, though, the researchers first need to be able to create the molybdenum disulfide sheets at a practical scale.?

The team currently gets small pieces via what?s known as the Scotch tape method, in which an adhesive is pressed against a molybdenum disulfide crystal and peeled off carefully.?

This sticks a few pieces of molybdenum disulfide to the adhesive, which is then pressed onto a piece of silicon.

"If we are very lucky, we will get a few flakes of molybdenum disulfide transferred from the scotch tape to the silicon wafer,??Palacios said. "And then we fabricate our devices."

The low-tech approach, he noted, is good for initial demonstrations of the material's potential, which is presented in a paper this month in the journal Nano Letters.??

A more efficient fabrication?process is required for commercialization of these potential technologies.

Palacios and colleagues are working on one such method via a process known as chemical vapor deposition. Initial results, he said, will be announced shortly.?

Stay tuned.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency erased 14 years of Lance Armstrong's career Friday ? including his record seven Tour de France titles ? and banned him for life from the sport that made him a hero to millions of cancer survivors after concluding he used banned substances.

USADA said it expected cycling's governing body to take similar action, but the International Cycling Union was measured in its response, saying it first wanted a full explanation on why Armstrong should relinquish Tour titles he won from 1999 through 2005.

The Amaury Sport Organization that runs the world's most prestigious cycling race said it would not comment until hearing from the UCI and USADA, which contends the cycling body is bound by the World Anti-Doping Code to strip Armstrong of one of the most incredible achievements in sports.

Armstrong, who retired a year ago, said Thursday that he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he ever took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without a shred of physical evidence.

He is now officially a drug cheat in the eyes of his nation's doping agency.

"Any time we have overwhelming proof of doping, our mandate is to initiate the case through the process and see it to conclusion as was done in this case," said USADA chief executive Travis Tygart, who couched the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture."

Tygart said the UCI was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

"They have no choice but to strip the titles under the code," he said.

The UCI and USADA have engaged in a turf war over who should prosecute allegations against Armstrong. The UCI event backed Armstrong's failed legal challenge to USADA's authority, and it cited the same World Anti-Doping Code in saying that it wanted to hear more from the American agency.

"As USADA has claimed jurisdiction in the case the UCI expects that it will issue a reasoned decision" explaining the action taken, the Switzerland-based organization said in a statement. It said legal procedures obliged USADA to fulfill this demand in cases "where no hearing occurs."

The International Olympic Committee said Friday it will await decisions by USADA and UCI before taking any steps against Armstrong, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games. Besides the disqualifications, Armstrong will forfeit any medals, winnings, points and prizes, USADA said, but the lost titles that now dominate his legacy.

Every one of Armstrong's competitive races from Aug. 1, 1998, has been vacated by USADA, established in 2000 as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States. Since Armstrong raced in UCI-sanctioned events, he was subject to international drug rules enforced in the U.S. by USADA. Its staff joined a federal criminal investigation of Armstrong that ended earlier this year with no charges being filed.

USADA, which announced its investigation in June, said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and even used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour.

In all, USADA said up to 10 former Armstrong teammates were set to testify against him. Included in the case were emails sent by Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for doping, describing an elaborate doping program on Armstrong's Postal Service teams, and Tyler Hamilton's interview with "60 Minutes" claiming had personal knowledge of Armstrong doping.

Had Armstrong chosen to pursue arbitration, USADA said, all the evidence would have been available for him to challenge.

"He chose not to do this knowing these sanctions would immediately be put into place," the statement said.

The decision surprised riders around the world.

At the Spanish Vuelta, riders including former rival and teammate Alberto Contador joined ex-Armstrong coach Johan Bruyneel in offering support. Another former rival, Filippo Simeoni, wondered why Armstrong dropped his fight..

"It leaves me a bit perplexed, because someone like him, with all the fame and popularity and millions of dollars he has, should fight to the end if he's innocent," Simeoni said. "But I guess he realized it was a useless fight and the evidence USADA had was too great."

At the USA Pro Challenge in Breckenridge, Colo., longtime friend Jim Ochowicz said he supported Armstrong's decision.

"He has done so much for our sport over the years and I am sad at what has transpired," he said. "I think he has earned every victory he's had."

Bruyneel said Armstrong was the victim of an "unjust" legal case.

"Lance has never withdrawn from a fair fight in his life so his decision today underlines what an unjust process this has been," Bruyneel wrote on his personal website. The Belgian, who manages the Radioshack Nissan-Trek team, has his own legal battle with USADA. He has opted for arbitration to fight charges that he led doping programs for Armstrong's teams.

Armstrong clearly knew his legacy would be blemished by his decision. But he said he has grown tired of defending himself in a seemingly never-ending fight against charges that he doped while piling up more Tour victories than anyone ever. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests that he passed as proof of his innocence during his extraordinary run of Tour titles.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now," Armstrong said Thursday night, hours before the deadline to enter arbitration.

"Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances," he said. "I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities."

Although he had already been crowned a world champion and won individual stages at the Tour de France, Armstrong was still relatively unknown in the U.S. until he won the epic race for the first time in 1999. It was the ultimate comeback tale: When diagnosed with cancer, doctors had given him less than a 50 percent chance of survival before surgery and brutal cycles of chemotherapy saved his life.

Armstrong's riveting victories, his work for cancer awareness and his gossip-page romances with rocker Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch and actress Kate Hudson made him a figure who transcended sports.

His dominance of the Tour de France elevated the sport's popularity in the U.S. to unprecedented levels. His story and success helped sell millions of the "Livestrong" plastic yellow wrist bracelets, and enabled him to enlist lawmakers and global policymakers to promote cancer awareness and research. His Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised nearly $500 million since its founding in 1997.

Foundation officials said they remained "proud" of Armstrong and had received hundreds of messages of support from donors, partners and supporters since his announcement. Among them was Nike Inc., which said it planned to continue supporting Armstrong and the foundation.

"Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position," the company said.

American Century Investments, another partner, said: "While the actions taken against Lance are unfortunate, we understand his decision to drop his challenge to the USADA charges. The USADA may sanction Lance and attempt to strip his titles, but no one can take away what he's done for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer."

Questions surfaced even as Armstrong was on his way to his first Tour victory. He was leading the 1999 race when a trace amount of a banned anti-inflammatory corticosteroid was found in his urine; cycling officials said he was authorized to use a small amount of a cream to treat saddle sores.

After Armstrong's second victory in 2000, French judicial officials investigated his Postal Service team for drug use. That investigation ended with no charges, but the allegations kept coming.

Others close to Armstrong were caught up in the investigations, too: Bruyneel, the coach of Armstrong's teams, and three members of the medical staff and a consultant were also charged. Bruyneel is taking his case to arbitration, while two medical team staffers and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari didn't formally contest the charges and were issued lifetime bans by USADA. Ferrari later said he was innocent.

Armstrong was criticized for his relationship with Ferrari, who was banned by Italian authorities over doping charges in 2002. Former personal and team assistants accused Armstrong of having steroids in an apartment in Spain and disposing of syringes that were used for injections.

In 2004, a Dallas-based promotions company initially refused to pay him a $5 million bonus for winning his sixth Tour de France because it wanted to investigate allegations raised by media in Europe. Testimony in that case included former teammate Frankie Andreu and his wife, Betsy, saying Armstrong told doctors during his 1996 cancer treatments that he had taken a cornucopia of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.

Armstrong retired in 2005 and almost immediately considered a comeback before deciding to stay on the sidelines ? in part because he didn't want to keep answering doping questions. Three years later, Armstrong was 36 and itching to ride again. He came back to finish third in the 2009 Tour de France.

Armstrong raced again in 2010 under the cloud of the federal investigation. Early last year, he quit for good, making a brief return as a triathlete until the USADA investigation shut him down.

"He had a right to contest the charges," WADA President John Fahey said. "He chose not to. The simple fact is that his refusal to examine the evidence means the charges had substance in them."

(AP) ? While U.S. presidential candidates talk tough about what they see as China's unfair trade policies, one fact gets little notice: Chinese companies are investing more than ever in the U.S. and supporting thousands of American jobs.

With two separate billion-dollar deals in a struggling chain of movie theaters and in shale oil and gas, as well as other major ventures in the works, investment from China is set to hit record levels in 2012. Its cash-rich companies have expanded their presence here in the past three years, eager to tap the lucrative American market and U.S. knowhow.

The jobs created don't offset what American politicians and some economists see as the millions of jobs lost because of China's currency policies and the theft of intellectual property. Also, Chinese investment, especially in telecommunications and other sensitive businesses, isn't always welcome.

But the growth in investment underscores how the relationship between the U.S. and China is more complicated than depicted on the campaign trail. Cheap Chinese products have benefited American consumers, and China's massive purchases of Treasury securities have helped finance the U.S. budget deficit. And while Chinese investment in the U.S. is barely off the starting blocks given the size of its economy, some believe it could become a major source for American jobs.

"There's a huge amount of ignorance in the U.S. marketplace of how to take advantage of potential Chinese investment," said Larry Morrissey, independent mayor of Rockford, Ill., a city of 150,000 that hosts three major Chinese companies. While money is tight in the U.S., he said, Chinese firms want to invest and have the funds to do it.

But in the presidential campaign, China seems to attract only negative attention.

"They steal our intellectual property rights. They block access to their markets. They manipulate their currency," Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told supporters in Ohio last week. He accused President Barack Obama of allowing China to treat him like a "doormat" and vowed Mitt Romney would crack down on China cheating.

Obama, who has sought deeper ties with China, says his administration has nevertheless stepped up trade complaints and announced one in response to Chinese tariffs on U.S. auto exports during a campaign trip to Ohio in July.

But both the administration and the Republican-supporting U.S. Chamber of Commerce are actively seeking Chinese investment. They want to capitalize on the ambitions of state-owned and private Chinese companies to expand from the developing world to developed countries.

The private Rhodium Group, which closely tracks Chinese foreign direct investment, puts the total attracted to the U.S. since 2000 at $20.9 billion. It predicts that Chinese companies could invest between $1 trillion and $2 trillion internationally by 2020 and a significant chunk of that investment could come to the U.S.

"Chinese firms are arriving at the inflection point at which it makes sense for them to be developing more of a commercial presence in the United States and Europe," said Daniel Rosen, partner at the New York-based group.

While China is still far from emulating the outward expansion of Japanese companies into the United States the 1980s, the Japanese experience could be a formative example. Fears then that the U.S. economy might be dominated by Japan proved unfounded. Today, Japanese-affiliated companies employ about 700,000 Americans.

As a strategic and emerging military rival of the U.S., however, China brings with it more baggage. China still restricts foreign investment in much of its own economy. Many of its biggest companies looking to invest abroad are state-controlled.

Cybersecurity is also a major concern because of repeated reports of cyberattacks on Western companies and government departments originating from China. That has dented the prospects for its telecommunications and technology giants.

U.S. lawmakers have often weighed in on the debate. The House Intelligence Committee is investigating Huawei, one of the world's biggest suppliers of telecom gear, and its rival, ZTE, examining their ties to the Chinese government. It is also probing reports that ZTE is supplying surveillance equipment to Iran.

Pin Ni, president of the American arm of the private Wanxiang Group, an auto parts and renewable energy manufacturer that has close to 6,000 employees in the U.S., said negative views of China and political tensions between the two governments deter some companies. Yet in reality, he said, that's little impediment to doing business.

Ni set up Wanxiang America from a home office in Mount Prospect, Ill., in 1994, essentially as a sales outlet for the parent company. It now has 27 manufacturing facilities across 14 states and annual revenues of more than $2 billion and supplies most of the major American auto manufacturers. He said that only about 10 percent of the parts it supplies in the U.S. are now sourced from China.

"Our labor costs are higher (in the U.S.) but our overall costs are lower because it's more efficient here," he said.

Morrissey, the Rockford mayor, said Wanxiang had acquired a struggling auto parts manufacturer in his city. Attracted by the Chinese company's long-term commitment to the U.S., Rockford chose Wanxiang to develop a $12.5 million solar panel manufacturing plant employing 60 people and a large solar power farm as part of the city's strategy to attract more green business.

Two other major Chinese firms have investments in Rockford, including Dalian Machine Tool Group, which acquired Ingersoll Production Systems and employs 100 people. Rockford is also in talks with Wanxiang about plans to modernize the city center.

"A lot of American cities are completely on the sidelines," said Morrissey, who has made several trade missions to China. "I don't see many cities, especially cities of our size, doing what we are doing, of being proactive and looking to exploit the opportunities there are for Chinese investment."

Joy Huang, president of Connect East, which advises mostly Chinese state-owned enterprises on working in the U.S., said companies want to establish their own brand presence here ? something few Chinese firms have achieved, other than appliance-maker Haier and computer-maker Lenovo. She said the main challenge is learning to comply with the many regulations and customizing products for picky American consumers.

Chinese companies are targeting a wide range of industries, also including aerospace, banking, metals processing and plastics. In a sign of those diversifying interests, conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group announced in May it is acquiring cinema chain AMC Entertainment Holdings for $2.6 billion, the biggest Chinese takeover of an American company to date.

Eww! Newly discovered rat has no back teeth

A newly discovered rat in the Philippines doesn't have any molars, making it the only known rodent in the world without back teeth.

The long-snouted fuzzball has been dubbed Paucidentomys vermidax. "Paucidentomys" translates roughly to "few-toothed mouse," while "vermidax" means "worm devourer" ? a reference to the new species' diet.

"When we caught the animal, we were in the forest, and we knew right away that it was something different," said Jacob Esselstyn, a postdoctoral researcher in biology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. "But we couldn't see inside of its mouth, so had no idea of the unusual lack of teeth."

Esselstyn and his colleagues caught two specimens of the rat in pitfall traps on Sulawesi Island in the Philippines. These traps are essentially buried buckets, with tops level to the ground so that any small mammal running across the forest floor will fall in.

The rats live in wet, mossy forests at high elevation, Esselstyn told LiveScience. It's not yet clear how common they are, though they do seem difficult to trap. One of the rats had a stomach full of worm segments and nothing else, suggesting that the rodents eat mostly or only earthworms. [See Photos of the New Rat]

What makes Paucidentomys vermidax unique among rodents is its teeth. Every other rodent species ever discovered has molars for grinding food, Esselstyn said. P. vermidax has none. The rat also has unusual incisors at the front of its mouth. Instead of being wedge-shaped for gnawing like most rodent incisors, this rat's teeth are double-pointed bicuspids.

These odd teeth "may be used to cut or to tear earthworms into segments, but we don't really know how that works," Esselstyn said.

The likely closest relative of the new rat does have molars, Esselstyn said, suggesting that this rat lost its back teeth at some point during its evolutionary history. The ability to grind and gnaw has helped rodents become one of the most successful groups of mammals on the planet, Esselstyn said, adding that it's interesting this particular species has reversed that trait.

"It's just a good illustration of how much biodiversity is out there that we're not yet aware of," he said.

The researchers announced the find Tuesday in the journal Biology Letters.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 review

Galaxy note 10.1

Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 marries an ambitious pen input and user interface to hardware that's a little tough to digest, especially when you can get better for less.

In light of the recent ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and its ongoing litigation with Apple, it'd be hard to imagine that Samsung hasn't thought twice about its tablet strategy. Continually pushing out a revamped iteration of the flop before it (see: Galaxy Tab 2 10.1) has proven to be as ineffective as it is effortless, a sign of the times that just may have given birth to Samsung's latest flagship device, the Galaxy Note 10.1. It marks a shift from "content consumption to content creation", an evolution that Samsung is banking on to finally cement its name in the tablet market.

But is the integration of the S Pen into the user experience enough for the Note to stand out in a sea of Android tablets trying to do just that? And, more important, has Samsung found a niche worth a $500 price tag? Let's find out.

The Good

The Galaxy Note 10.1 is mostly fast and fluid, a testament to its top-notch processor and 2GB of onboard RAM. It's also handsome and well-designed, taking cues from the GS3. Samsung's S Pen has evolved into a sophisticated tool with exciting potential.

The Bad

That said, the Note 10.1 feels like it may snap in half at any given moment, and its certainly one of the least-sturdy tablets on the market today. The 1200x800 display is a joke compared to its competitors, and really distracts if you're familiar with nicer screens.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Note 10.1 is unique and stands out among a seemingly endless sea of competitors, though not always in a good way. Samsung has stepped back and reshaped its tablet strategy, now focusing on user experience rather than specs alone, and if you keep an open mind about the included S Pen, you just might find it more handy than you would have imagined. However, we believe the $500 you'll spend on a base Note 10.1 would be better spent on two Nexus 7s. However, if you've got your heart set on a full-sized tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is the way to go if you want to keep from breaking the bank.

In This Complex Patent Battle, Apple And Samsung Take Their Marketing Strategies To Court

apple-samsunggraphicApple and Samsung are presenting their closing arguments today in one of the biggest U.S. tech trials in history. As the ball heads over to the jury's court, it has become painfully obvious over this past month just how complex this case is. The case involves more than a dozen different patents, more than 30 allegedly infringing devices, claims of all shapes and sizes (utility, design, trade dress, and standards essentials), and that's just the beginning. Both sides are arguing their cases (and defending themselves) concurrently, and each have done their part to either submerge evidence or slip some to the press, all the while infuriating federal judge Lucy Koh.

(AP) ? At the first ever White House "kids state dinner," first lady Michelle Obama told America's top junior chefs Monday that the dishes they cooked up are proving that fun eating can be "healthy and tasty at the same time."

"Your recipes truly stood out," she said to an East Room filled with kids who won a nationwide recipe competition. "You came up with dishes that were packed with nutritious, delicious ingredients ? dishes that are good for you but more importantly they taste good, too. See? It can happen."

The event was the latest effort in Mrs. Obama's "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity with more exercise and a better diet.

As the kids dined on fine Reagan-era China, Mrs. Obama listed some of the winning entries, calling them "amazing stuff": Kickin' Chicken Salad, Power Pesto Pasta, Miss Kitty's Egg Salad Sensation and Secret Service Super Salad, dreamed up by one youngster who hopes one day to join the presidential protective detail.

The 54 winners, ages 8 through 12, were chosen from more than 1,200 entries.

"I was just experimenting and being creative," said Haile Thomas, 11, of Tucson, Ariz., whose original recipe of quinoa, black bean and corn salad was one of six winning entries cooked up by White House chefs at the luncheon. "I never thought my recipe would go national."

Thomas, who's been cooking since age 5, hopes one day her YouTube cooking show will make it on commercial TV.

Other kid-inspired dishes on the festive East Room tables: kale chips, cabbage Sloppy Joes, baked zucchini fries, "strawberryana" smoothies and "summer fruit garland." Mrs. Obama called the luncheon the "hottest ticket at the White House."

"You guys inspire us here at the White House to keep doing what we do and keep this message at the forefront," she said about her Let's Move initiative.

President Barack Obama also dropped by to applaud the winners and thank them for "spreading the word about healthy eating."

"Usually, I get invited to state dinners," he said. "This time I had to crash."

"I'm an OK cook," Obama added. "I make a very good chili."

He also warned the youngsters not to drop any table scraps because first dog Bo is on a diet.

The children, who got to bring a parent or grandparent to the White House, were also being treated to a performance by Nickelodeon stars Big Time Rush and a tour of the White House kitchen garden.

The contest is a partnership with Epicurious.com and the departments of Education and Agriculture. It also supports the campaign against childhood obesity.

Uber Screwed Me (But At Least It Bought Me Breakfast!)

uber-finger1I?ve been a wonderful state of bliss for the past week boating in North Carolina (did ya miss me? I missed you). But I came back today and I?m still pretty pissed at Uber for charging me $97 for a $65 ride to the airport last Friday. More importantly, the charge worries me about the company's future. Last Friday I needed to get from my apartment (by AT&T Park) to SFO. Simple, right?
