Check insurance policy before severe weather damage | KFOR.com

OKLAHOMA CITY ? With storm season here, experts want Oklahomans to take a close look at their insurance policies.

Insurance companies across the metro spent Monday filing claims for those hit by the hail storm Friday night.

State Farm Agent Sherrie Jefflo said April, May and June are usually the busiest months for claims.

?The majority of the damage that I?ve seen today is mostly cars,? Jefflo said.

According to experts, people should know their deductible and what their homeowners and car insurance covers.

Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak believes people should sit down and talk with their insurance agent.

?Take that 30, or 45 minutes, or an hour with your licensed agent or broker and go through your policy,? Doak said. ?One great question to ask is, ?walk me through a claim if I had a total loss.??

The Oklahoma Insurance Department will also answer any questions consumers have about insurance policies.

Boston, 'you will run again'

President Barack Obama on Thursday traveled to Boston to deliver a message to those in the city touched by Monday's deadly bombings as well as individuals from around the world watching our country's response: we will persevere.

?This doesn?t stop us," Obama said at an interfaith service Thursday held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston's South End for those killed and injured by the bombings at the Boston Marathon finish line. "And that?s what you taught us, Boston: to push on, to persevere." As of Thursday, the attack had killed three and injured more than 170.

He spoke to the injured watching Thursday's service from their hospital beds, alluding to injuries that left many with severely injured or missing limbs.

"You will run again. Of that I have no doubt, you will run again," the president said to wide applause.

Obama spoke in detail about two of the victims who lost their lives: 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester and 29-year-old Krystle Campbell of Medford. And he assured residents of Boston that they are not alone in their recovery from Monday's tragedy.

"Every one of us has been touched by this attack on your beloved city. Every one of us stands with you,"

"For millions of us, what happened on Monday is personal," he said.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama joined members of Congress, state and local officials and faith leaders for Thursday's service.

Boston mayor Tom Menino spoke at the beginning of Thursday's service, highlighting what he called "the courage of our city at work"-- men who removed their shirts to staunch bleeding, women who aided the injured, business owners and residents who opened their doors to the wounded and offered their assistance.

"Nothing can defeat the heart of this city," Menino said.

The president on Thursday will also meet with families impacted by the bombing as well as first responders, deputy press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Boston.

School of the Broken Heart: Some Thoughts on Fatherhood in ...

Our text for consideration at Fellowship Church today was Ephesians 6:1-4, and it got me thinking about what Ephesians has to say about earthly fathers and how it relates to our heavenly Father.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ?Honor your father and mother? (this is the first commandment with a promise), ?that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.? Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

I was focused intently on v.4, dealing with my fathering and all the ways I provoke my children to anger (Jesus, have mercy on me). Part of my reflection came around to how our authority is from God (Rom 13:1) and that our fathering will either help or hinder our children from receiving fathering from God. Ideally, I am to father my children in such a way that lays down an imprint for them to understand and receive the correction and instruction of the Father of Jesus. When my fathering is corrupted by sin, I create obstacles and stumbling blocks for my children.

God the Father created earthly fatherhood to model his heart and convey his kingdom, and Ephesians is one of the few places that I know of in the Scripture that directly links this relationship.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith?that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Eph 3:14-19 ESV)

The phrase, ?from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,? seems to imply the link between God the Father and earthly fathers (and more generally, families). The fact that this relationship is tied to our ability to receive the love of Christ only reinforces the importance of fatherhood.

The last thought I wanted to share is possibly the most important ? what do I do with my broken, sinful fathering? I always feel so guilty hearing sermons like this, so much pressure to do better. For the most part, I have long given up on the project of ?trying harder.? The only thing such efforts produce is either more profound failure or insufferable self-righteousness.

I realize all too painfully that my only hope is to return to the Father through the shed blood of his Son (my elder brother) Jesus. His blood covers not only my fatherly failures but also my fatherly successes, for all of it falls short of the glory of Father God. My only hope, and my children?s only hope, is in the righteousness of Christ bestowed upon sons (and daughters) by faith. His gracious fathering provides all I need to father my children with grace, wisdom and faith.

Reds hit 6 HRs, send Nationals to worst loss, 15-0

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Three solo homers. A two-run shot. A three-run shot. A pinch-hit grand slam. The Reds did it all, connecting every which way off a pitching staff that has never seen anything like it.

Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart each homered twice, and the Reds hit six in all ? including Xavier Paul's pinch grand slam ? while sending the Nationals to a 15-0 defeat Friday night, their first loss of the season and their worst loss since returning to Washington as a team.

"There was something in the air tonight," Paul said after his first career grand slam. "We were able to put 15 runs on the board, and not many teams have done that against the Nationals."

The Nationals swept their opening series against Miami by allowing only one run in three games. They were helpless against Cincinnati's surprisingly powerful offense ? nine homers in the last two games, though none by Joey Votto or Jay Bruce.

Everyone else is piling them up.

"A lot of people were questioning our hitting after the last series, even though we won two out of three," Cozart said. "Tonight, we showed that we can hit. Hopefully, we'll keep it going this weekend."

The series matches the NL's top two teams from last season. Washington led with 98 wins, followed by the Reds with 97. The teams have a history of close games ? four of their last eight had gone to extra innings.

This one quickly turned into a rout in one of the majors' most homer-friendly ballparks. The Reds had 19 hits, including a single by reliever Manny Parra, and finished with more homers than the Nationals had hits (5).

It was the Nationals' most lopsided loss since baseball returned to Washington in 2005, topping a 15-1 defeat to Detroit on June 19, 2007, according to STATS LLC. Washington had been the last major league team without a loss this season.

"I've had my share of bad games along with good games," said Dan Haren, who gave up four homers in his Nationals debut. "They're tough to deal with, but the sooner you forget about it, the better.

"It's such a long season. I've probably got 30-plus starts left. This start isn't going to define how the year goes."

Haren (0-1) signed a one-year, $13 million deal in the offseason, joining a formidable pitching staff that threw shutouts in the first two games of the season. It all came apart in Cincinnati's most lopsided shutout win since a 17-0 victory over Milwaukee at Cinergy Field on Aug. 7, 1998.

Homer Bailey (1-0) gave up two hits in six scoreless innings. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run in his last 19 regular-season innings, a streak that includes his no-hitter in Pittsburgh on Sept. 28. He gave up a run during the playoffs.

Bailey even got a double, too.

"That's when you know the team is having a good night, when I get a hit," Bailey said.

Frazier hit a solo shot into the upper deck in the second inning. On the next pitch, Cozart broke his 0-for-11 slump to start the season with a homer that a fan caught at the top of the wall in left field. Nationals manager Davey Johnson talked to the umpires about fan interference, but they declined to review it and stuck with the call.

It would be that kind of a night for the Nationals.

Cozart hit a three-run homer off Haren in the third, giving him two homers in three pitches from the right-hander. It was his first career multihomer game.

Shin-Soo Choo added a solo homer in the fourth that barely cleared the wall in center as a fan reached to catch it. Johnson asked for a review of that one and got it. Three minutes, 39 seconds later, the umpires upheld their call.

Cozart got his career-high fifth RBI on a sacrifice fly. Frazier added a two-run homer in the seventh, his third in two games. Paul's pinch-hit grand slam off Henry Rodriguez made it 14-0.

NOTES: The Reds will honor Johnson with a gift on the field before Saturday's game. Johnson managed the Reds to a division title and the NL championship series in 1995, but former owner Marge Schott replaced him with Ray Knight. The Reds didn't win another division title until 2010 under Dusty Baker. ... The Reds have fanned 43 batters, a club record for the first four games of a season. ... A fan ran onto the field and slid into second base during a pitching change. The man ran into the outfield before police tackled and handcuffed him.

ATLANTA Humans' closest animal relatives, chimpanzees, have the ability to "think about thinking" what is called "metacognition," according to new research by scientists at Georgia State University and the University at Buffalo.

Michael J. Beran and Bonnie M. Perdue of the Georgia State Language Research Center (LRC) and J. David Smith of the University at Buffalo conducted the research, published in the journal Psychological Science of the Association for Psychological Science.

"The demonstration of metacognition in nonhuman primates has important implications regarding the emergence of self-reflective mind during humans' cognitive evolution," the research team noted.

Metacognition is the ability to recognize one's own cognitive states. For example, a game show contestant must make the decision to "phone a friend" or risk it all, dependent on how confident he or she is in knowing the answer.

"There has been an intense debate in the scientific literature in recent years over whether metacognition is unique to humans," Beran said.

Chimpanzees at Georgia State's LRC have been trained to use a language-like system of symbols to name things, giving researchers a unique way to query animals about their states of knowing or not knowing.

In the experiment, researchers tested the chimpanzees on a task that required them to use symbols to name what food was hidden in a location. If a piece of banana was hidden, the chimpanzees would report that fact and gain the food by touching the symbol for banana on their symbol keyboards.

But then, the researchers provided chimpanzees either with complete or incomplete information about the identity of the food rewards.

In some cases, the chimpanzees had already seen what item was available in the hidden location and could immediately name it by touching the correct symbol without going to look at the item in the hidden location to see what it was.

In other cases, the chimpanzees could not know what food item was in the hidden location, because either they had not seen any food yet on that trial, or because even if they had seen a food item, it may not have been the one moved to the hidden location.

In those cases, they should have first gone to look in the hidden location before trying to name any food.

In the end, chimpanzees named items immediately and directly when they knew what was there, but they sought out more information before naming when they did not already know.

The research team said, "This pattern of behavior reflects a controlled information-seeking capacity that serves to support intelligent responding, and it strongly suggests that our closest living relative has metacognitive abilities closely related to those of humans."

Disney halts game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars titles

Disney shuts down game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars games

If you're old enough to have played PC games for more than a decade, LucasArts (originally LucasFilm Games) likely has a permanent place in your heart after a string of legendary adventure and flight combat releases. You'll unfortunately have to put the company as you knew it squarely in the past -- Lucasfilm's new owner, Disney, is ending internal development at LucasArts. The software house is shifting to a licensing model for Star Wars games, reportedly "minimizing the company's risk" while expanding the range of games on offer. There's a chance that in-progress titles like Star Wars 1313 will survive with outside help, according to a spokesperson in touch with GameInformer, but talk of layoffs from Kotaku dampens any chances for direct follow-ups to favorites like Grim Fandango. We won't mourn too much when personas like Ron Gilbert, Lawrence Holland and Tim Schafer have long since moved on to other companies -- still, it's unquestionably the end of an era for game and movie fans alike.

Stock futures point to flat open, S&P near record high

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures were poised to open little changed on Wednesday as investors brushed off a weak reading on private sector employment and the S&P 500 remained within striking distance of an all-time intraday high.

Investors expect market movements to be slight ahead of the release Friday of the closely watched nonfarm payrolls report, with few major trading catalysts before then. The S&P has gained less than 0.1 percent so far this week.

Futures were little changed despite the latest ADP National Employment Report, which showed 158,000 private sector jobs were added in March, far less than economists had expected. The February report was revised upward by 39,000.

"People aren't worried about employment compared to the overall macro outlook, and they have a general idea that the economy is improving," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York. "That should allow us to hold firm."

The S&P has been near its record level of 1,576.09 for the past several sessions, and inched to within three points of it on Tuesday before pulling back, though it ended at a new closing high.

The March read for the Institute for Supply Management's services index, due at 10:00 a.m. EDT, is seen at 55.8, down from 56.0 in the previous month.

While data has largely been positive and helped to propel the equity market in the first quarter, a few disappointments have made investors cautious. The ISM manufacturing index on Monday came in below expectations.

"Some data has indicated softening, but things should remain quiet until Friday," Kaufman said.

S&P 500 futures rose 0.4 point, less than 0.1 percent, though it was above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures slipped 5 points and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.75 point.

The S&P 500 has advanced more than 10 percent this year, and last week, broke above its 2007 closing high, a level it exceeded on Tuesday. The Dow first broke above its 2007 record on March 5.

In company news, Zynga Inc surged 11 percent to $3.40 in premarket trading after the company said it would begin offering poker and casino-style games in Britain in partnership with Bwin.party Digital Entertainment .

ConAgra Foods Inc fell 1.6 percent to $34.98 before the bell. The company reported third-quarter earnings that fell 57 percent even as revenue grew.

Monsanto Co rose 0.4 percent to $104 in premarket trading after reporting earnings that beat expectations and raising its full-year profit forecast.

Verizon Communications Inc ruled out a full takeover of Vodafone , turning the focus yet again to whether the two telecom giants can do a deal over their Verizon Wireless joint venture.

U.S.-listed shares of Vodafone fell 2.9 percent to $28.56 in premarket trading while Dow component Verizon was off 0.4 percent at $49.30.

Issues in the euro zone will continue to be in focus a day after Cyprus concluded a bailout deal. The plan, which still requires ratification, would mean the country receives a 10 billion euro loan and that it has until 2018 to carry out measures to shore up its finances. The country's finance minister resigned after concluding the deal.

While investors have largely used any market decline as a buying opportunity, the situation in Cyprus has been a major source of market uncertainty in recent weeks.

Stocks rose on Tuesday, lifted by healthcare stocks, after a government decision on payment rates. Strong factory orders data also added to the positive tone.

USC hires FGCU's Enfield as men's hoops coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Southern California hired Andy Enfield as men's basketball coach on Monday night after he took Florida Gulf Coast to the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Athletic director Pat Haden said Enfield has reached an agreement with the Pac-12 school. He will be introduced on Wednesday.

"Those in the basketball world have known of his abilities for a while," Haden said.

He said Enfield's success at FGCU wasn't a flash in the pan and that his up-tempo style and stingy defense will be fun for both the Trojans players and fans.

"In meeting with Pat Haden, I was very impressed with his vision for the men's basketball program," Enfield said in a statement. "I am looking forward to bringing an exciting, up-tempo style of play to USC and building the men's basketball brand into one that the fans and basketball community will enjoy and respect."

The 43-year-old coach was 41-28 in his only two seasons as a head coach at FGCU in Fort Myers, Fla. He led the Eagles to a school-record 26 wins this season, including upsets of No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State as a 15th-seed in the NCAA tourney. They lost to Florida last Friday.

Enfield's team earned the nickname "Dunk City" for its spectacular dunks and alley-oops. The Eagles scored 70 or more points 25 times this season, and ranked 16th nationally in steals with 8.9 per game.

They won the Atlantic Sun tournament, and had the league's player of the year in Sherwood Brown and defensive player of the year in Bernard Thompson.

Haden called Enfield "a relentless recruiter and he has integrity and great character."

Enfield takes over from interim coach Bob Cantu, who had a 7-8 record after succeeding Kevin O'Neill, who was fired in mid-January.

The Trojans lost their final three games, including a defeat in their first game of the Pac-12 tournament. Starting center Dewayne Dedmon and backup big man James Blasczyk were suspended indefinitely and missed the league tourney following allegations the pair was involved in a melee in Spokane, Wash., during the team's final Pac-12 road trip of the season.

Cantu's status wasn't immediately clear. He has been on the Trojans' staff through four coaching changes and is the longest tenured assistant in the Pac-12.

O'Neill had a 48-65 record during 3? years at the private school known primarily for its powerful football program after going 6-26 last year while setting a USC record for losses.

The move is a big step up for Enfield.

FGCU has about 11,300 students, plays in a 4,500-seat arena and has only existed for 16 years; USC has 37,000 students, the Trojans play at 10,258-seat Galen Center, and the school has a long tradition of sports success, especially with its nationally ranked football team.

The basketball team has long played in the shadow of cross-town rival UCLA, which hired Steve Alford from New Mexico on Saturday.

USC hasn't made the NCAA tournament since 2011. The Trojans are 12-17 all-time, with their best results coming in 2007 and 2001, when they lost in the regionals, and in 1954, when they lost in the national semifinals.

Before going to FGCU, Enfield was an assistant at Florida State from 2007-11, where the Seminoles made the round of 16 in 2011. He began his coaching career in the NBA as a shooting coach for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1995-96, and was an assistant with Boston from 1999-00.

Enfield's wife, Amanda, drew attention during the NCAA tournament for her model-looks. The couple has three young children.
