Video: How badly does US need Pakistan?

LESTER HOLT, anchor: And for more on the situation with Pakistan , let's bring in retired Army General and NBC News military analyst Barry McCaffrey . General , if the US loses access to those supply routes through Pakistan indefinitely, how badly does it hurt US operations in Afghanistan and the pursuit for terrorists along the border?

General BARRY McCAFFREY, Retired (NBC News Military Analyst): Well, Lester , I think we're one step short of a strategic crisis. Probably 50 percent of the tonnage that supports 150,000 NATO troops 800 miles from the sea, comes in through the port of Karachi and then up through either the Khyber Pass or in through the southern route . So I do not believe we can sustain a presence, probably more than about 90 days, and continue operations at this rate. So we've got to talk to them, we've got to pay them, we've got to apologize for the strike. We have no option literally.

HOLT: We appreciate your insight, General McCaffrey .
