There were many new fashion faces on the red carpet at the 84th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, but they brought with them a lot of old Hollywood glamour.

Rooney Mara in white Givenchy, Emma Stone in red Giambattista Valli and Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen were among those making bolder-than-normal choices at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles.

"I picked it because I loved it," said Mara of the Riccardo Tisci custom-made gown made of mixed laces and multilayered chiffon.

Stone's gown had a high-neck bow, a trend on the designer runways right now, and Chastain's black strapless gown designed by McQueen creative director Sarah Burton was embroidered with gold bullion and metallic thread.

"Stacy's dress was chosen straight off the Fall '12 runway. The fabric has real gold metal woven into it, which gives it an almost liquid feel," described Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, herself an Oscars attendee in Marchesa on the arm of husband Harvey Weinstein.

"I was at fashion week, saw it on the runway and was like, 'I need to have that,'" Keibler said.

Paltrow, who has done the Oscars as a pink princess and Goth rebel in past years, made the best-dressed lists of InStyle fashion director Hal Rubenstein and Louise Roe, Glamour magazine's editor-at-large.

"Gwyneth had the unexpected dress, and I find that very appealing," Rubenstein said.

"Absolute knockouts were the simplest," said Roe, co-host of ABC's live coverage. "I died for Gwyneth in Tom Ford with its elegant cape, Emma Stone in fuchsia halter-neck Valli and chunky-crystal Vuitton clutch. Shailene Woodley was a home run in Valentino and Jessica Chastain in classic gold McQueen. Wow."

Roe was pleased to see Woodley in her modern, fashion-forward gown. "She's Hollywood's new hot thing, and this dress finally lived up to our expectations: chic, simple, elegant, I loved it."

York College beats Mary Washington to win men's basketball championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The late-game runs continued, and so did the late-season magic for the York College men's basketball team.

Of course, Saturday's game was no different, although it wasn't a last-minute comeback.

York trailed 30-26 at halftime, before Paul Kouvaris drained a fall-away jumper that barely beat the shot clock and gave the Spartans a 33-32 lead with 13:31 to play.

Moments later, Mitch Kemp broke a 34-all tie with a stunning 3-pointer. Mo Oursler (13 points) followed an Eagles free throw with another 3 and, suddenly, York led 40-35.

Although second-seeded Mary Washington cut the margin to one point a short while later, the Spartans never trailed again.

"We just never quit," said Kouvaris, who led all scorers with 16 points. "We were down four, we were right in it. We knew it."

"I thought we were fine at halftime as good as this team has been at the end of games," Gamber said.

While his 3-pointer was his only basket, Kemp took a crucial charge in the waning moments that deflated the Eagles' comeback. The play made the couple hundred York fans that made the trip hysterical.

"It is unbelievable. We played unreal tonight," the York Suburban grad said. "Winning a district title was awesome, (but) this is way harder. Even just the experience was great."

The Spartans handled Mary Washington's pressure defense well, and only had six turnovers in the second half.

"We needed to stand up to their defensive pressure. We were great with that," Gamber said. "Mary Washington is a really good team. We can be especially proud of this championship. We took the toughest road. I am really proud of the kids."

Oursler's coast-to-coast layup made it 52-46 with three minutes to play. After two Adam Earle free throws made it an eight-point lead, the Spartans forced turnovers on the next four Eagles possessions, capped by Kemp's charge.

Earle said losses to St. Mary's and Stevenson, combined with a victory at Hood by scoring two baskets in the final 0.7 seconds, put the team on its present course.

"We've been a little bit streaky. We are streaky at the right time," Earle said.

After getting the trophy and posing for pictures, the Spartans cut down the nets at the first-year Mary Washington facility.

Gamber took the final snips and held the net up high for all to see as his team and fans chanted his name.

"It's for him, for all of us," Kouvaris said. "It's not over yet. We are going to the tournament."

Earle added, "It's always in the back of our minds. We don't want his career to end. He basically is York College basketball."

A mountain lion was chased up a tree near San Jose, California by one bold German Shepherd. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

LOS ALTOS HILLS, Calif. -- A dog chased a cat up a tree Tuesday morning in Los Altos.?

Normally, that wouldn't be a big deal, but this cat is a rather large mountain lion.

The California Department of Fish and Game responded to a report of a mountain lion 30 to 40 feet up an oak tree at an upscale home on La Barranca and Elena roads Tuesday morning.

An 85-pound German Shepherd named Cody apparently was scary enough to cause the mountain lion to retreat. Cody is owned by Denise and Larry Del Carlo.

Mountain lions have been known to eat things larger than Cody, according to the experts, but they say for some reason they tend to run from pet dogs.

The mountain lion eventually came down the tree after the Department of Fish and Game decided to let it be. They believe the cat was a male, weighing about 110 pounds.??

Cody's neighbor John Sphar said as soon as he saw that a mountain lion was in the neighborhood, he called all of his neighbors to tell them to be on the lookout.

Sphar said he will put his goats in a locked barn just in case the big cat comes back. He said he lost a goat to a mountain lion on Christmas Eve 2010.

For me, I'm having a tough time breaking the diet soda habit. I know I should only drink water, but I still tend to have a diet soda every day. I still occasionally eat Subway, which is relatively low-calorie but has no nutritional value in the bread. And the occasional snack-size bag of Baked Doritos.

Black also perfectly describes metaphorically the fist-like little hearts of scumbags like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for making good on his threat to veto the marriage equality bill passed in the New Jersey Senate late Thursday night.

Democratic leaders in the New Jersey legislature have vowed to have the necessary votes to overturn Christie's veto and one cannot overstress the importance of doing so. It's been a very exciting week for those of us in the LGBT community: The NJ legislature passing a marriage equality bill (or gay marriage bill, if you're feeling a little more adventurous) comes on the heels of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals' 2-1 ruling that California's Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. It's important to parse the distinction between the 9th Circuit striking down the unconstitutionality of overturning existing state law and them saying that opposing gay marriage is in itself unconstitutional (which they did not).

Still the 9th Circuit Court's ruling for not the first time revealed the pettiness and lawlessness behind the homophobic mindset that created Prop H8 and has kept this useless referendum on the books for over three years. Said Judge Stephen Reinhardt in his majority opinion,

Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.

For now, I'll gloss over his failure to include us bisexuals in his ruling and just cut to the chase: That it's simply wrong to impose your notions of morality at the expense of the dignity of your fellow human beings.

As I said last night in my jeremiad to GOProud, the hateful organization that discriminates against liberals as everyone but liberals discriminates against them, the only thing distinguishing the LGBT community from everyone else is with whom we choose to sleep. And with whom we fall in love. Falling in love, as virtually any human being will tell you, is as involuntary as our sexual identities.

It's the love part that freaks out right wingers and homophobes so much they cannot even bring themselves to address it. This is why they confine their arguments to gay sex, something guaranteed to give their fellow homophobes the dry heaves. They faithfully trot out Leviticus, a book in the Bible that was plainly written by deeply disturbed people, as if it's the law we ought to be observing and enforcing including the capital punishment part.

It's the narrowing of their argument to anal sex, swallowing semen, one woman going down on another woman and AIDS that produces a visceral reaction in others who are simply incapable of believing that sexual orientation is something you're born with. Love? Well, that's much, much harder to invalidate. We may not have experience in gay sex and many of you may even feel it's repugnant. But most of us, if we're lucky, know what true love feels like.

So, automatically defeated on that front, they narrow their arguments as they seek to criminalize homosexuality, even going as far as to import their hateful homophobia to other countries with the express purpose of imposing the death penalty.

And as if discriminating against their fellow humans isn't bad enough, the GOP is taking more than baby steps toward genocide by decriminalizing anti-gay bullying and even physical violence. When the Michigan Senate voted on an anti-bullying bill, House Republicans had already succeeded in inserting an amendment that neatly defanged the legislation and even subverted its entire reason for being. Michigan Republicans made it legal for one student to bully, beat and even kill a gay, lesbian or bisexual student as long as they whip out the Religion/Morality card.

Essentially, it turned Matt's Safe School Law into a 007 license for homophobes to beat gay students with absolute impunity. Even more despicably, this was hailed as a "compromise" with Republicans, despite it offering no real protections for LBGT youth who since time immemorial have been specially singled out for persecution.

This genocidal movement against LGBT youth is multi-faceted. Right wingers like Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council screamed until they were blue in the face over President Obama making Kevin Jennings the head of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. No imagination needed, because that?s what?s happening in the industry for the workers who take care of us when we are too old or too sick to care for ourselves. Workers who care for homebound Grandma and Grandpa only earn about $21,000 a year on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But the?industry that provides some 1.8 million home health care aides to the country?s disabled and chronically ill population is fighting new legislation that would guarantee those workers the same federal labor rights afforded to all other workers by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The Obama administration proposed legislation in December that would guarantee minimum wage and overtime coverage to home health care aides in the United States.?Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis pointed out that nearly 40 percent?of them rely on public benefits like Medicaid and food stamps, and many lack health insurance coverage. Home health care aides are paid an average of $10 an hour, but many are not guaranteed overtime pay when they work for more than 40 hours a week, and they're also not paid for travel time between client visits. (The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.)

As first reported by USA Today,?the home health care industry is fighting the proposal tooth and nail, claiming that a pledge of minimum wage and overtime pay would hurt caregivers because it would limit their hours?and could?send their charges to nursing homes and other institutions.?Home Instead Senior Care, one of the largest providers of home health care aides, spent?$362,000 fighting the White House?proposal last year, according to USA Today.

Home Instead Senior Care said it isn't opposed to paying minimum wage for home health care workers.

"The issue is keeping overnight care affordable for seniors and their families," Home Instead chief executive Roger Baumgart said in an e-mail to msnbc.com. "If agencies are required to pay overtime wages for overnight stays, it will significantly increase the cost of providing care to seniors." He wrote that the added expense would cause Medicare and Medicaid spending to rise.

The White House proposal?would overturn an exception to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act that was granted in 1974 to allow friends and family to offer in-home care?without running afoul of federal wage and hour regulations. The Labor Department has said that home health care companies have used the exception as an excuse to lower salaries for nursing assistants and other aides.

"The exemption was never really intended to apply to businesses like home care agencies, and it wasn?t supposed to apply to workers who were doing these jobs as a vocation," said?Steve Edelstein, national policy director of the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute.? "We just have to recognize that it?s a real job and pay for the services accordingly."

The majority of home health care aides don't even work a full 40 hours a week,?said?Edelstein, citing a recent PHI report that found that most of them work from 31 to?34 hours. That tends to defuse fears about costly overtime pay, he said.

In addition, he noted that?the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates?the aging U.S. population will require more than 800,000 more home health care workers in the next decade.

Medicare and Medicaid accounted for about 75 percent of home health care revenue as of?2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. State budget cuts could?make it difficult for Medicaid to cover higher salaries for home health care workers, according to USA Today.

In 2007, a case involving home health care aide Evelyn Coke, a single mother of five, was brought to the Supreme Court when she alleged that she was earning just $7 an hour without overtime benefits. Ms. Coke, who said she sometimes worked three consecutive 24-hour shifts, lost the case.
