Scientists Invent Mind-Reading System That Lets You Type With Your Brain [Science]

Researchers have invented a mind-reading system that, for the first time in history, allows any person to type words and phrases letter by letter, just by thinking. It all occurs in real time, without moving a single muscle or uttering a single word. More »

HBT: D-backs suspend broadcaster for wanting to wear suit?

Nick Piecoro has an update to the suspension of Diamondbacks announcer Daron Sutton. We heard yesterday from Jerry Crasnick of ESPN that the dispute was possibly about the dress code, and that Sutton was suspended due to ?insubordination,? though it wasn?t very specific. Now Nick has this:

A source confirmed that dispute to?The Republic, saying that while the club prefers its broadcast team to wear?polo?shirts?adorned with the Diamondbacks logo, Sutton has lobbied to wear suits.

That?s backwards from what a lot of people assumed when this was reported yesterday. ?And no, I have no idea when the pic attached to this post was taken. I assume it was on the same day this was created.

In other news, what would you do to a co-worker who totally tried to kill casual days? Man, buzzkill, Daron. Buzzkill.

Gene mutations pinned for brain cancer | The Science Bulletin

mphillips007_-_brain2

Medulloblastoma is the most common paediatric malignant brain cancer.

Children diagnosed with the most common paediatric malignant brain cancer, medulloblastoma, will benefit from more targeted treatment following the identification of genetic mutations in the cancer.

The international research findings published in Nature may lead to the development of new drugs and better outcomes for patients, says Richard Cohn, Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales.

A specialist at the Centre for Children?s Cancer and Blood Disorders, Associate Professor Cohn contributed to the research led by a team at St Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center in the United States.

?The discovery of tumour-specific gene alterations linked to subtypes of medulloblastoma provides important insights into the development of the cancer and highlights targets for new treatment approaches,? he said.

The findings were a direct result of collaboration between six children?s oncology centres internationally, which pooled patient specimens and information.

?Now that we know about these mutations, the hope is we?ll be able to develop new drugs, or utilise existing drugs not currently used to treat this disease, to specifically attack the molecular abnormality,? Associate Professor Cohn said.

?Ideally this will lead to better outcomes for patients and better cure rates and the ability to achieve that with fewer side effects.?

Prices hint at faith in real estate market

A number of recent commercial real estate deals with astounding bid prices suggest that developers are gaining confidence but are also giving rise to concerns that the money pouring into commercial property in search of a quick return will burst a bubble.?

On June 18, the Chinese property developer Evergrande Real Estate Group Ltd set a record for land prices in Guangzhou when it bought a plot for the equivalent of 32,9687 yuan ($5,184) per square meter.?

Evergrande's 1.32 billion yuan bid price for the plot, 800 million yuan higher than the starting price, dazzled the industry and public, especially at a time when most Chinese real estate developers are cash-strapped because of a tight housing sale policy Beijing adopted last year.?

Evergrande is not alone in pouring money into commercial property.?

Shanghai Wanzhuo Investment Co Ltd paid 175 million yuan in early June for a parcel in Jiading New Town. The per-sq-m price equaled 16,063 yuan, 435 percent of the starting price.?

The last deal with a spillover price exceeding 400 percent occurred more than two years ago, when China's real estate market was at its peak of expansion.?

This month has seen not only an upsurge in residential sales, but also a comeback in developers' enthusiasm for commercial property. Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and second-tier cities such as Chengdu and Tianjin all have seen commercial property deals with high spillover prices.?

Analysts said developers' revived confidence explains this new round of enthusiasm. In Beijing, 10,576 registered house purchases were made in the first half of June, a 46.5 percent year-on-year increase, according to the Beijing Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau.?

Xue Jianxiong, an analyst with China Real Estate Information Corp, said the past freeze caused land prices to plummet, stimulating developers to hunt for bargains.?

Another influence is the local government, according to Zhang Dawei, an analyst with Centaline Property.?

"The current tight controls on residential housing have depressed the price of land for such projects. This made local governments more willing to sell land for commercial purposes," Zhang said.?

"Combined with the more generous credit support in this sector, we have found a renewed zeal for commercial property."?

But experts on commercial property warned the flash money pouring into this sector - as many investors who are less experienced in the sector seeking fast returns - could mean a disaster for commercial property.?

"With so many residential developers who have little understanding of commercial property rushing in, raging competition is on the horizon," Shen Guojun, chairman and CEO of China Yintai investment company, told Sina.com.?

Yintai's past investments concentrated on commercial property.?

"The value of commercial real estate lies not in building, but in management," Shen said. "If it is managed well, it can be a lasting blessing. But if not, it can be a burden or even junk."?

Wang Shaoshan, secretary-general of the China Commercial Real Estate Association, agreed.?

"Unlike residential property, which can bring fast returns, the value of commercial real estate can be realized only by a gradual increase in rent through careful management. But a lot of developers now rely on one-off sales," he said.?

An earlier industry report by Sina.com showed that the top 20 Chinese developers, most concentrating on residential property development, all have ventured into commercial property.?

The latest report by CBRE, a property consultancy firm, said the oversupply of commercial property indicated a bubble is surfacing. In China's second-tier cities, it could take 15 to even 60 years in extreme cases to sell existing projects.?

Shen said three years from now the commercial property market might be more miserable than the residential housing market.?

But some experts said the overcapacity occurred only in second- and third-tier cities. There should be no reason to worry about the market in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai.?

"In Beijing, the vacancy rate in office buildings is zero. The demand still outnumbers the supply, and there is plenty of room for price growth," Zhang said.?

PPTV Ranked No.1 by Daily User Traffic in China Online Video ...

Released on June 28th, 2012

BEIJING, June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ ? According to the latest statistics released on June 3, 2012 by iResearch, the leading China internet research company, PPTV?s Daily Unique Visitors have reached 34 million, ranked No. 1 in the online video industry. With intense competition among China video players and low royalties for online video users, video companies are pursuing a strategy of content differentiation to stay ahead of the competition. PPTV has been building its differentiated content base on sports programming, exclusive Korean TV dramas and Taiwanese live TV shows for quite a while. Such a differentiated content strategy has helped the company retain its user base and support its growth amidst strong competition.

(Photo: http://www.prnasia.com/sa/2012/06/28/20120628122823561218.html )

iResearch released data based on the measurement of ?Comprehensive Video Services Ranking? that includes user traffic from both web and client software based video usage. The recent data shows that PPTV, Youku and PPS are ranked as the top three in the industry, all passing 30 million unique users in May 2012. Many believe that Euro 2012 has helped PPTV boost its traffic as PPTV is known for its live streaming technology and large sports content holdings. PPTV is one of only two video companies which acquired the Euro 2012 live streaming copyrights (Tencent video is the other). According to industry experts, PPTV has grown its traffic rapidly in the past six months, and is ranked No.1 in YTD growth, seen from the year-to-date traffic growth trend. After completing a $250 million financing deal with Softbank last year, PPTV invested in a exclusive content library including sports programming, Korean dramas and Taiwanese TV shows. These contents are generally not available on Chinese TV broadcasting stations. Content exclusivity and differentiation keeps PPTV ahead of the competition.

Although the top three companies are very close to each other in the overall ranking of Comprehensive Video Services, PPTV had outperformed most of its peers via its growth rate of 26.8%, followed by Tencent at 25.1%. The Euro 2012 programming has clearly provided a big boost to both of their traffic.

The measurement of ?Daily Unique Visitors? is considered as a key index for advertisement placement. Some experts have pointed out, with Youku and Tudou?s merger, that their expected synergy has yet to be seen as the integration process goes on. Suffering from recent lawsuits from Tencent and Sohu, PPS seems to have a shortage of copyrighted content in its content library. It is a fact that most video players can hardly differentiate themselves from each other from a content standpoint. On the other hand, PPTV has constantly invested in live sports programming, such as Euro 2012, English Premier League, NFL, UFC and domestic sports like the CBA, CSL, etc. In early 2011, PPTV signed deals with Korean and Taiwanese TV broadcasters, so PPTV now owns exclusive rights to most Korean TV dramas and Taiwanese TV shows. ?We have been pursuing our content differentiation strategy and have focused our investment on it. We understand that sports draw in male viewers, and Korean and Taiwanese TV shows are very appealing to female users,? said Vincent Tao, CEO of PPTV, adding, ?However, having great content does not guarantee traffic growth.? PPTV, once viewed as a client software based video player, has engineered and released their new video products across all devices, including their web viewing product and tablet and mobile phone based products for Android, iOS, Mac, Win 8, etc. The wide availability of its video experience has helped PPTV attract more video users. At the end of May 2012, PPTV ranked as the No.1 most downloaded iPad appstore video application.

The next question is whether PPTV is able to monetize their programming content effectively. In China, Sports media has gone through many tough times. PPTV has developed a so called SEM program, Sports Entertainment Marketing, to attract advertisers. According to a third party source, PPTV had bagged more than 30 advertising sponsors for its Euro Cup live programming at an estimated dollar amount of over 30M RMB. ?2012 is all about sports and monetization,? said Tao. With the Olympics coming, it could be a great year in terms of content differentiation among China?s major online video players.

Little Known Copywriting Tips For Multilevel Marketers To Quickly ...

By alberttorressmt | June 27, 2012

If you?re a network or online marketer you are losing sales each day unless you?ve mastered these simple, but effective killer copywriting tips.

What is Copy Writing?

?Copy? is written text, in the sales world. This can mean web sites, e-mails, sales letters? Any written word planned to sell something or get a result.

So ?copywriting? is as it sounds, writing copy.

But only a few know how to write killer copy that really sells, so here are some basic pointers to help.

Be Yourself

First and foremost, always be yourself. You can study and implement these copywriting tips, however it won?t be real to your reader if you are not being yourself. People like to buy from who they like. They would like to deal with a real person, not a canned sales routine.

Let the real you come out in your writing. Do not be shy about it. If you?re genuine, and the readers can feel it, your copy will always perform better. You?ll sponsor more distributors into your multi level marketing company, or sell more products.

Write How You Talk

People don?t talk the way that they write. Yet too many times, when writing copy, we try and make everything brilliantly professional and grammatically correct. And that?s fine, depending on the intention of what we are writing.

Sales copy in multilevel marketing is designed to persuade folks to become a part of your team. To join you as a coach or upline. To grow a relationship. In fact , that is what multi level marketing is really about.

So if you need the reader to become comfortable, start to know you and to be open to your direction, you had better write to them like you would if you were speaking to them.

You see, when we read, we hear it in our mind. When we read something that sounds sterile and perfect, we do not have the chance to bond with the writer. Imagine having someone walk over to you at a party and start speaking that way. You?d likely quickly excuse yourself and marvel at how unusual it was! And you definitely would not buy anything from them.

Now imagine a real cool person comes up, is comfortable, causes you to feel at ease. They chat to you in regular words, with normal slang, takes an interest in you and has fascinating stuff to say. You can immediately like and connect to that person. Likewise, if your sales copy can convey that same feeling, readers become customers or team members.

So write like you speak, no matter how bad it is.

Tell a Story

People like to hear stories. They love to be entertained. They will pay attention if you interest them.

Most copy writers tell stories that their readers can relate to on a very personal level. By understanding what your prospects? experiences might be, you can write about your own experiences that they can empathize with.

So if your message is about a product that will help fix a real struggle they are having, tell them about your similar experience and how this resolved it. Or about somebody you know and managed to help. Give them some background so that you are relate-able to them.

Do not simply pitch features and benefits in bullet points. It will not create the emotional connection that you want to have with your audience.

The Call to Action

Advertising 101 here, but too frequently overlooked. Never, never, never fail to give a clear, firm call to action. Tell the reader precisely what to do next. Click This. Join Now. Begin Here. Watch this Video.

Whatever you want them to do, you need to TELL them. It isn?t being dominating or rude. Remember, they are reading your sales piece because they have a problem you are addressing. They have come to you for direction. For guidance. Don?t let them down.

A call to action is a reply to their call for help! Never produce any advertising piece without one.

Practice

The simplest way to improve your copy writing abilities is to write! Practice makes perfect, so write often and start using these copywriting tips in everything you write from this time on and watch your MLM sponsoring take off!

JPMorgan Bails Out Junius Fund - Zacks Investment Research

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM - Analyst Report) is set to bail out its cash-strapped Junius Real Estate Partners Fund by investing $110 million as the initial capital. This move was necessitated after the fund failed to generate adequate capital amidst tough financial backdrop.

In early 2011, JPMorgan?s asset management division had launched Junius Fund to earn good returns by focusing on identification and execution of new investment opportunities through a strong investment team backed by the solid infrastructure of the company?s asset management division. Currently, the fund is developing properties worth $465 million. These properties include a resort in Virginia, an equestrian farm, along with a shopping mall in Chicago and investments in an Ohio-based hotel chain

Prior to the recent crisis, several firms supplied capital to their real estate funds to keep them well-poised to execute any new investment opportunity that comes along. However, with crashing of the real estate market and the stringent regulatory landscape, the banks have become cautious of perilous investments. Moreover, in such a tough economic scenario, wary investors do not want to jeopardize their money by investing in a relatively inexperienced fund. Consequently, JPMorgan had to announce the slowdown in its efforts of building the $750 million fund.

With Junius in dearth of sufficient funds, the parent company had to pitch in for the rescue effort. JPMorgan?s plans to invest $110 million of capital may not comply with the Volcker rule. The rule suggests that banks should not invest more than 3% into their own funds. However, some solicitors are of the opinion that JPMorgan will unlikely be in trouble because the fund operates as a non-conventional real estate fund, and as a result does not fall within the purview of the rule.

The real estate market is not booming as it did prior to the crisis. This has prompted several big organizations to reduce their activities in this arena. Banking giant Citigroup, Inc.(C - Analyst Report) vended its real estate fund to Apollo Global Management, LLC (APO - Snapshot Report). Other big names like Morgan Stanley (MS - Analyst Report) have initiated new funds, but with a relatively lower target.

Conclusion

JPMorgan?s efforts to keep the fund balanced are credible. The company hired some of the prominent faces of the real estate world to manage the fund. Moreover, it was ready to provide 3% of the fund?s capital requirement and had supported it strongly through its flagship asset management division. However, with the sluggish economic recovery, especially the real estate market showing no signs of betterment, the fund was in danger of running into trouble. Therefore, we believe that JPMorgan?s rescue effort is justified.

Currently, JPMorgan retains a Zacks #4 Rank, which translates into a short-term Sell rating. Considering the fundamentals, we also maintain our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.

Groupon 2.0 (for Android)

Looking for a good deal? On the go? With minimal effort? Groupon, the groundbreaking online couponer, released a revamped app this month that makes finding and using good deals pretty effortless. Groupon 2.0 for Android's new interface is clean, bright, and Ice Cream Sandwich-y with lots of layers and scrolling, but it doesn't scroll smoothly. From what I've read in other comments and forums, my Samsung Galaxy Nexus is not alone.

What's Groupon?
For the uninitiated, Groupon is one of the most popular destinations for coupons on a wide range of products, ranging from restaurants to massages. There are two types of deals: 'Daily' and 'Now!' 'Daily' deals are offered for a few days and expire within several months, and are only activated when enough people purchase the deal (typically the next morning). 'Now!' deals can be used immediately, but they can only be redeemed within a set time frame. However, if you don't get a chance to use the deal, Groupon will refund you. ?

UI Refresh
Groupon 2.0 brings all the features of the Web application to your Android device, but adds geolocation and print-free redemptions.

The app requires permission to track your phone, which I know bothers our more privacy-conscious readers. The reason for this is to display nearby deals based on your location. As soon as you sign in, the app displays a map with markers of nearby "Now" deals. A scrollable menu at the top lets you see deals by topic: Nearby, Featured, Getaway, Goods, Our Favorites, and Rewards.

As someone who always has problems deciding which mediocre place to grab a quick, cheap lunch, I found the geolocation feature useful. Instead of going to my usual mediocre deli across the street, today I redeemed a $6 for $10 voucher at another mediocre deli I hadn't been to a few blocks away.

If you've synced your credit card, simply tap "Buy" to, you guessed it, buy a Groupon on the spot. There's no printing necessary to redeem it as with the desktop Groupon?simply show the vendor your order number on your screen, or store it in the app for later use. By default the app also pushes notifications for expiring, unused Groupons.

Every Groupon member sees different deals when they open their accounts because Groupon takes into account all your past purchases and click-thrus. You can also refine the deals you see by "heart-ing" categories from dozens of deal types. Choose from deals like Foodie, Just Dance, Tee Time, and much more.

This year Groupon added a Rewards loyalty program that lets you collect points to redeem exclusive Groupons, by using your credit card at participating Groupon Rewards stores. Participating stores will have a green Groupon sticker at the cashier. Interesting idea, but I have yet to see this sticker anywhere in New York City.

Get Your Groupon
Despite its disappointing IPO, Groupon is still one of the biggest players in the market and reportedly commands 90 percent of the daily deals space, along with Amazon's Living Social site. Google Offers (beta) is also making strides in this crowded category, and recently launched its first Android app as well. However for now, the mature Groupon 2.0 for Android offers more features and better organization, so if you had to go with just one daily deals app I'd recommend Groupon's.

The Bachelorette Recap: Making Her List, Czech-ing It Twice

Six roses. Four dudes. Things are getting serious on The Bachelorette.

After the past two weeks saw villains Ryan Bowers and Kalon McMahon dispatched by Emily Maynard, were there any more fireworks in store this evening?

Who succeeded in wooing our beloved single mom from North Carolina, and who failed to make the final cut before next week's coveted hometown dates?

Follow this link for a rundown of The Bachelorette spoilers we know thus far, including the (alleged) final three. Then read on for THG's official +/- recap!

Emily and John

First, Prague is on my bucket list now. Beautiful city. Plus 4.

Our Southern Belle Emily Maynard walks the streets of Prague, sans daughter Ricki, musing about the hometown dates. Hostman Chris Harrison tells the guys this week is important because next week are hometown dates. Jef with one F tells us he's really hoping he gets a hometown date next week. We get it. Hometown dates are important. Minus 3.

Of the six guys, three of them will get a one-on-one date with Emily this week. The first date goes to Arie Luyendyk Jr., probably because Emily wants to kiss him (loudly) a few more times. His jacket has elbow patches. Minus 3.

Emily thinks it's shady that Arie hasn't told her about his relationship with Cassie the producer. His failure to disclose his past relationship with someone in Emily's inner circle is disloyal somehow to her.

Chris decides to set the record straight about the rumors regarding Arie and Cassie and introduces a segment of Cassie interviewing Emily about Arie. Cassie says it's no big deal, it was a long time ago, blah blah blah. Emily says the fact that they dated is no big deal. It's the fact that nobody told her that they knew each other that's the problem.

Emily probes Arie to see if he'll spill the beans about his relationship to Cassie. The deep dark secret he's hiding? He had a tattoo of an ex-girlfriend's name (a different Cassie) on his arm but he's had it covered up now. Minus 12.

Emily, Arie, and Cassie all sat down, off camera, to discuss this relationship. Arie said he didn't think his relationship with Cassie Lambert mattered, which is why he didn't tell her. Emily realizes that her feelings for Arie haven't been affected by this revelation. They kiss some more at dinner. A lot more. Plus 10.

Emily and Arie KissBack at the house, the other guys all wonder what Arie and Emily are doing. Doug says they're probably just having dinner somewhere cool. Sure, Doug, that's all.

John gets the next one-on-one date. Chris says it's killing him inside that he's not getting dates. Minus 4 for melodrama.

Arie tells Emily that when they were in Croatia, he realized something. He loves her. Plus 20.

And then they kiss some more. And then there are actual fireworks.

John and Emily go on a date and paint on the Lennon wall. Emily says she likes him as a person, but she doesn't know how she feels about him romantically. So they put their initials on a padlock that signifies eternal love and try to fasten it on a wall in Prague. But the lock won't stay fastened. Symbolic lock, yes? John's not the one. Minus 3.

Chris is "driving himself crazy" sitting at the house. So crazy he has to drink. He's on edge. DUDE, you're in PRAGUE. Stop whining and go see something cool! Minus 12.

Emily's still confused about John, so she takes him to dinner in a dungeon. Didn't she take him to dinner in a cave already this season? John's ex-girlfriend cheated on him, so now he's not a starter. He's a closer.Emily and John on The Bachelorette

Chris is still whining about how he didn't get another one-on-one date. Still. He's not getting the third one-on-one either. Because it's a group date with Sean and Doug as his wingmen.

Sean just has to see kiss Emily, so he goes running around the city of Prague looking for her. Plus 3.

Conveniently, there's a table for two at a quaint little cafe. Conveniently. Minus 2.

Sean, Doug, Chris, and Emily explore dungeons and towers and Doug makes a toast to her gracious nature. She's concerned about their chemistry. I'm concerned about their chemistry.

Doug's grazes Emily's leg with his hand and loses his train of thought completely. He says he's a slow mover and he really wants to kiss her. So then he does. And it's the most awkward kiss in the history of the show. Minus 10.

Doug's going home now.

There's a little more room on the group date without Doug there. Emily gives Sean and Chris each a key. Sean's key opens the door. Chris is going to go whine some more, I'm sure.

Jef with one F gets the final date in Prague.

Chris finally gets some alone time with Emily and the first thing he wants to know is why he hasn't had a one-on-one date with her. She says something about giving him back his confidence and then gives Sean the rose. Plus 4.

Chris is pissed off over not getting the rose. Temper, temper, Chris. Minus 7.

Emily thinks Jef would make a great dad since he's a big kid himself. Emily, honey, the last thing you want is a grown kid to take care of. Minus 3.

They go to a marionette shop and after buying two marionettes, Jef leaves Emily standing in the street. He has to go back and buy a marionette for Ricki. Plus 15.

Emily and Jef go to a library to play with their puppets. And Jef uses his puppet to tell Emily's puppet that the puppet is beautiful and that his puppet is "100...1 million percent in love" with it. I...plus? minus? I can't decide.

They sit on a blanket in the middle of a library and talk about the hometown date. One thing Jef's got going for him? He's from a big family and Emily's ovaries are on overdrive. Plus 5.

Jef broke up with his last girlfriend because his parents didn't like her. No pressure, Emily.

Again, they're in the middle of a library. Making out and talking about marriage. In a library. Does Emily read?

Emily Maynard's Hair

It's time for another cocktail party and Chris is near tears. The person he was yesterday isn't the person he is and he believes in them. And man tears. All he wants is a few minutes to talk to Emily. Minus 18.

She's decided to skip the cocktail party and go straight to the Rose Ceremony. Chris looks like he's about to puke. Or punch something.

Sean's headed to a hometown date next week thanks to the rose that Chris didn't get. Jef gets the first rose of the ceremony. Arie gets the second.

Chris pipes up and says he just has to talk to her, so they take a walk into the next room where he man blubbers while she looks on in doe-eyed wonder. Minus 2.

His man tears worked. Chris got the final rose.

Going home:

  • Doug (cut loose on the group date)
  • John "Wolf" (no rose)

Sean, Arie, Jef, and Chris are taking Emily home to meet their families on next week's hometown dates.

Hubble views globular cluster M10

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Like many of the most famous objects in the sky, globular cluster Messier 10 was of little interest to its discoverer. Charles Messier, the 18th century French astronomer, cataloged over 100 galaxies and clusters, but was primarily interested in comets. Through the telescopes available at the time, comets, nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies appeared just as faint, diffuse blobs and could easily be confused for one another.

Only by carefully observing their motion -- or lack of it -- were astronomers able to distinguish them: comets move slowly relative to the stars in the background, while other more distant astronomical objects do not move at all.

Messier's decision to catalog all the objects that he could find, and that were not comets, was a pragmatic solution which would have a huge impact on astronomy. His catalog of just over 100 objects includes many of the most famous objects in the night sky. Messier 10, seen here in an image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, is one of them. Messier described it in the very first edition of his catalog, which was published in 1774 and included the first 45 objects he identified.

Messier 10 is a ball of stars that lies about 15,000 light-years from Earth, in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer). Approximately 80 light-years across, it should therefore appear about two thirds the size of the moon in the night sky. However, its outer regions are extremely diffuse, and even the comparatively bright core is too dim to see with the naked eye.

Hubble, which has no problems seeing faint objects, has observed the brightest part of the center of the cluster in this image, a region which is about 13 light-years across.

This image is made up of observations made in visible and infrared light using Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The observations were carried out as part of a major Hubble survey of globular clusters in the Milky Way.

A version of this image was entered into the Hubble's Hidden Treasures Image Processing Competition by contestant flashenthunder. Hidden Treasures is an initiative to invite astronomy enthusiasts to search the Hubble archive for stunning images that have never been seen by the general public. The competition has now closed and the results will be published soon.

U.S Coast Guard Alameda Asbestos | Northwest Mesothelioma ...

During World War II the U.S Coast Guard brought Alameda land at the same time as the U.S Navy acquired land for a Naval Air Station. The surrounding area around the site of the U.S Coast Guard was already home to numerous shipbuilding and industrial companies such as Alameda Works Shipyard, Todd Shipyard, Plant Shipyard, as well as an array of other engineering corporations. The U.S Coast Guard transformed the islands 67 acres of land into solely dedicated training center facilities, barracks, mess halls and galleys, engineering and administration buildings, and an infirmary. After this initial contract had been completed in 1942, further works were carried out for additional barracks, an incinerator, anti-aircraft trainer building, and docks for small boats.

The training center was originally used to train recruits, and when initially opened on June 1, 1942 it provided accommodation for 900 men. At a later date speciality training was offered at the facility to signalmen, firemen, laundrymen, raidomen, boatswain?s mate, cooks and bakers, and volunteer port security. After the war the facility continued to operate, and became the U.S Coast Guards largest field unit on the West Coast during the 1960s, until it was shut down in 1982.

Aerial 2 Coast Guard Island

Exposure to asbestos for those living and working in and around the U.S Coast Guard Island in Alameda would have been unavoidable due to the use of many asbestos containing products and the frequent use of ships that also contained this material. Asbestos was also used in the production of many military products, significantly increasing the risk of exposure to all military members. Asbestos fibers can easily move throughout the air and spread quickly and silently, which is why it is possible for workers that did not directly handle or asbestos or asbestos containing products to still suffer from asbestos related illnesses.

Some of the different materials used in the U.S Coast Guard training facility that would have been made completely or partially from asbestos, or contained asbestos fibers, include;

  • Electrical Insulation
  • Gaskets
  • Boiler Room Equipment
  • Plumbing and Pipe Insulation
  • Pumps
  • Turbines
  • Welding Drops or Blankets
  • Standard Multi Purpose Cloth

Asbestos is a fibrous material that attaches itself to the linings and tissue of the lungs when inhaled. Over a period of time, sometimes as much as 30 years, scar tissue can begin to form and this tissue can become malignant, resulting in lung cancer. Asbestos is directly linked with a number of respiratory ailments, but the most serious asbestos related illness is the cancer mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a terminal illness which begins on the outer lining of the lungs and eventually spreads to the lining of other organs. Organizations such as the U.S Coast Guard were well aware of the serious and dangerous effects of asbestos, yet they did nothing to ensure the safety of their workers.

If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness, we may be able to help you get the justice you deserve. When construction began at the U.S Coast Guard facility in Alameda, the threat of asbestos was already well understood. We are here to pursue justice against asbestos companies that knew their products were fatal, yet did nothing to warn the hard working men and women that used, or came in to contact with them. If you have any questions or concerns, please don?t hesitate to contact us. We?re offering free consultations ? schedule one today.

Hamas official pledges fresh try at truce with Israel

A leader of the ruling Hamas said Saturday the militant group had agreed to try anew an Egypt-brokered ceasefire with Israel, after six days of bloodshed in and around the Gaza Strip.

Hamas and "the Palestinian resistance factions will respect the truce as long as the [forces] of the occupation do the same and that's what we told our Egyptian brothers who demanded that we cease fire," Ayman Taha told AFP.

"The Egyptians have demanded that the [forces] of the occupation stop their aggression and have informed us that they are prepared to do so," he added.

"We told them that we shall respond to calm with calm; if the occupier stops [its attacks] there will be no further retaliation by the resistance factions."

An official close to the group said the truce would take effect from midnight (2100 GMT).

Earlier in the day Hamas threatened to call off a previous truce attempt announced on Wednesday which was unraveling, with Palestinian officials reporting three Palestinians killed and dozens wounded in seven Israeli air strikes Saturday.

An Israeli military spokesperson said that by Saturday evening 24 rockets had slammed into southern Israel from Gaza, with another five brought down by its Iron Dome air defense system.

More were said to have fallen at sea or inside the Gaza Strip itself.

A man in the town of Sderot was injured in one attack during the morning, Israeli police said.

The current round of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation began with air strikes Monday morning, just hours after gunmen from Sinai carried out an ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt, killing an Israeli civilian.

Israel has said its sudden spike in Gaza operations was "in no way related" to the Sinai border incident, with the military saying the air force was targeting militants poised to attack the Jewish state.

Since Monday Palestinians have reported 15 dead in Gaza strikes, with dozens wounded. At least 150 rockets and mortar shells have hit Israel, wounding five people, among them four border police officers.

Ashton Eaton sets world record in decathlon

(AP) ? Meter by meter, Ashton Eaton kept swallowing up real estate on a track that has always felt like home.

Second by second, the clock to the side of that track ticked away ? daring him to cross the finish line in a time that would put his name in the record books.

Eaton was every bit as relentless and stubborn as that clock Saturday. He set a personal best in the exhausting 1,500-meter finale and is now the world-record holder in the decathlon ? the cream of the crop in the event that determines the world's best athlete.

"It's like living an entire lifetime in two days," Eaton said.

He finished the grueling two-day event with 9,039 points in the U.S. Olympic trials to beat Roman Sebrle's 11-year-old mark by 13 points.

Eaton joined the likes of Bruce Jenner, Dan O'Brien and Rafer Johnson among the Americans who have held the world record. He did it on the 100th anniversary of the first Olympic decathlon ? and many of the American greats who have made history in the event were on hand to watch Eaton do the same.

He did it in terrible weather ? drizzle, rain, cold and then, finally, sunshine as he got ready for the final 1,500-meter push.

"He was in position for it, and he went for it and there was no letdown," O'Brien said. "The most impressive thing was that he kept up his intensity in this weather."

Eaton, the 24-year-old and a former NCAA champion for University of Oregon, needed a time of 4 minutes, 16.37 seconds in the 1,500 to break the mark. He finished in 4:14.48.

When it was over, he bent down and put his hands on his knees, then brought them up to cover his mouth. Tears were falling ? elated and shocked all at the same time.

A few minutes later, he took the mini American flag he'd been handed as a newly minted member of the U.S. Olympic team and stabbed it into the turf near the scoreboard that displayed his accomplishment: "World Record Decathlon. Ashton Eaton. 9,039 points." Photographers lined up for the historic shoot. Certainly, Eaton will own a copy or two by the time this night is over.

"I wanted it to be a special event because this is my home state, my hometown, my home university," he said to the crowd at Oregon's Hayward Field. "And just from the start, I just wanted to perform well."

What to do for an encore?

We'll see in six weeks in London, where he'll go in as the favorite, along with the man he beat, defending world champion Trey Hardee, who finished 656 points back.

"Going into London, I'm not going to change a thing," Eaton said. "Clearly."

Chances for an American medal sweep in London, thought to be a good possibility, were vanquished when defending Olympic champion Bryan Clay fell during the hurdles. He finished 12th.

Pretty much everything else on this memorable evening in Oregon got second billing ? though there was one big question mark when the night ended: Allyson Felix left the stadium thinking she'd lost the third spot in the women's 100 to Jeneba Tarmoh by less than 0.0001. But after a lengthy review, officials declared the race a dead heat, then huddled to figure out how to break the tie for the final spot.

Elsewhere, Lolo Jones' leaned at the finish line to earn the third and final Olympic spot in the 100 hurdles by 0.04 seconds. Dawn Harper won in 12.73. Tyson Gay made it through his first 100 heat cleanly, while LaShawn Merritt, Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards-Ross all advanced in the 400.

Nobody, however, covered more ground, or did it better, than Eaton.

He opened his pursuit Friday by setting world-best marks for the decathlon in his first two events, the 100 (10.21 seconds) and long jump (27 feet). He had a mark of 46 feet, 7 1/4 inches in shot put, cleared 6-8 3/4 in the high jump and ran the 400 in a driving rainstorm in 46.70 seconds to finish the first day in the mix for the world record.

He returned Saturday to equally dreary weather, but didn't slip. The results: 13.70 seconds in the 110 hurdles, 140-5 inches in the discus, and 17-4 1/2 in the pole vault. His javelin throw of 193-1 meant he would need to top his personal best by at least 2.57 seconds in the 1,500.

The sun finally peaked out shortly before Eaton made it to the starting line, illuminating his green and black shirt and neon-orange shoes. He stayed on pace the entire time and crossed the line with nearly 2 seconds to spare.

Eaton also overtook O'Brien's American record of 8,891 points, which he set in 1992 ? nine years before Sebrle became the first man to break 9,000 points.

Back in 1976, Jenner put the decathlon squarely in the spotlight, winning the Montreal Olympics and becoming a celebrity when he returned home. He was on the front of the Wheaties box back then, and the fact that he's on the front of it now ? as part of a retro marketing campaign ? is as good an argument as any to prove the event no longer has the stranglehold on the public that it once did.

But that hardly diminishes this accomplishment.

Eaton went through the large part of the first nine events in dreary weather ? a long jump in drizzle, the 400 meters in a driving downpour. He smiled through most of it, and when he was introduced before the final 1,500 race, he waved to the crowd, then put his hands together to try and close the deal.

It was, he said, more than he expected.

"I thought I'd get a good 100, a good long jump and from there, just have a go at it and make the team," Eaton said. "But when you're in this place, in this atmosphere, this is what happens. I'm so glad I was able to be a part of it."

Here are some of the latest health and medical news developments, compiled by the editors of HealthDay:

Seizure Leads to U.S. Commerce Secretary's Resignation

A seizure suffered earlier this month has led U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson to resign from the Obama administration.

Bryson, 68, was found unconscious after he was involved in a series of traffic crashes in the Los Angeles earlier this month. A breathalyzer test did not detect any alcohol, the Associated Press reported.

In his resignation letter, Bryson said his decision was a "consequence of a recent seizure and a medical leave of absence."

He also wrote: ""I have concluded that the seizure I suffered on June 9th could be a distraction from my performance as secretary, and that our country would be better served by a change in leadership," the AP reported.

People who live near roads with high levels of traffic noise are at increased risk for a heart attack, according to a new study.

Researchers followed more than 50,000 people in Denmark, ages 50 to 64, for 10 years and found that for every 10 decibel rise in traffic noise near a person's home, there was a 12 percent increased risk of a first heart attack, ABC News reported.

The study was published Wednesday in the journal PLoS One.

Previous research has found some association between traffic noise and heart health but study lead author Dr. Mette Sorensen said she was surprised to find such a direct link between traffic noise levels and heart attack risk, ABC News reported.

"Previously, there seemed to be no effect up to around 60 decibels," she said. "But I see increases at around 40 decibels up to the highest level, around 82 decibels. It doesn't seem to be a level where there are no effects."

Group Challenges Merck's Marketing of Children's Allergy Medicine

Drug maker Merck is using animated characters from the movie "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" to improperly market over-the-counter allergy medicine to children, public health advocates charge in a complaint filed Wednesday with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

The Public Health Advocacy Institute and 10 other groups say the marketing strategy for Children's Claritin is dangerous and deceptive. They point to the inclusion of Madagascar movie stickers in some boxes of the allergy medicine, activity books that parents can download for their children, and Merck's enlistment of a group of mothers who blog to hold Claritin-themed Madagascar viewing parties for their children and friends, The New York Times reported.

The complainants also noted that the same animated characters are used to promote other children's products such as candy and gummy snacks. This could lead children to confuse the grape-flavored Claritin tablets and syrup for candy, they warn.

Merck is reviewing the issue, spokeswoman Kelley Dougherty told The Times. But she added: "We advertised in appropriate venues to reach those parents of children who may benefit from the use of Claritin, and not to the children themselves."

The FTC will review the complaint, an official said.

Fat-Free Salad Dressings Reduce Nutrient Intake: Study

Putting a fat-free dressing on your salad may actually reduce the amount of nutrients your body absorbs from the vegetables and fruits in your salad, a new study suggests.

Purdue University researchers found that some fat in dressings is essential to absorb compounds such as lycopene and beta-carotene, which have been linked with a reduced risk of illnesses such as heart disease and cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The study was published online Wednesday in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

"If you want to utilize more from your fruits and vegetables, you have to pair them correctly with fat-based dressings," lead author Mario Ferruzzi, an associate professor of food science, said in a news release, The Times reported. "If you have a salad with a fat-free dressing, there is a reduction in calories, but you lose some of the benefits of the vegetables."

New Dengue Fever Test Approved by FDA

A new test for dengue fever that was developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The test can identify all four types of dengue virus types and will help diagnose dengue within the first seven days after symptoms of the illness appear, when is when most people are likely to see a doctor, the CDC said.

This is the first FDA-approved test that detects evidence of the virus itself and the test can be performed using equipment and supplies that many public health laboratories already use to diagnose influenza. Test kits will be available for distribution in early July.

Dengue viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes. Thousands of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands develop dengue every year, and dengue is a leading cause of fever in American travelers returning from Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Severe dengue infections can lead to hemorrhage, shock and death. There are no vaccines to prevent dengue or medicines specifically approved to treat the disease, but early medical care can greatly reduce the risk of death, the CDC said.
