(AP) ? The New York Jets were a delicious treat for the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco used a solid running game, a smothering defense, a little bit of the wildcat-style offense and even blocked a punt to cruise to a 34-0 victory. That romp came a week after a loss at Minnesota in which the 49ers were just as outclassed as the Jets were Sunday.

"For sure, the whole week there was more of an edge; it was just a bad taste in your mouth," Alex Smith said. "I don't think that goes away in one day. We wanted to be 3-1 and got it done."

They got it done so emphatically that Jets coach Rex Ryan was visibly shaken by the lopsided defeat, so much so that he struggled to describe how poorly his Jets (2-2) performed.

"It's obviously unacceptable," Ryan said. "It starts with the coaches. The players ... they've got to dig deep, look down at the themselves."

Ryan took no solace from his team losing to one of the NFL's best. San Francisco (3-1) has everything Ryan wishes his team did.

The 49ers ran for 245 yards and Carlos Rogers returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown.

Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick ? on a wildcat-like option ? all ran for scores. The defense had an interception and three fumble recoveries, and special teams blocked Robert Malone's punt to set up the final touchdown.

Defensive end Aldon Smith called it a statement win.

"Yeah, that's right," he said. "After the last game, some people were questioning us and we knew what we were capable of. We played all together as a unit and proved what we are as a defense."

And as an offense. And on special teams.

Rather than head back to the West Coast after the Minnesota loss, coach Jim Harbaugh chose to have his team stay in eastern Ohio and practice at Youngstown State all week. Last season, the 49ers did the same thing and won both games, in Cincinnati and then at Philadelphia. The 49ers wound up going to the NFC championship that season, and if they play anything like they did against the Jets, they could very well find themselves advancing deep into the postseason again.

"This is more the way we are accustomed to playing," said Harbaugh, the 2011 Coach of the Year.

It was San Francisco's first shutout since beating the St. Louis Rams 26-0 last December.

Meanwhile, the Jets lost top wide receiver Santonio Holmes to what appeared to be a serious left foot injury. It was the first time New York was shut out since losing 9-0 to Green Bay on Oct. 31, 2010, and the Jets' biggest shutout home loss since falling 37-0 to Buffalo in 1989.

If Holmes misses significant time, the Jets would be without their two biggest playmakers after All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis was likely lost for the season with a torn ligament in his left knee last week at Miami.

"We got to play with who we've got," Mark Sanchez said. "None of those guys are going to get better overnight."

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Holmes caught a pass from Sanchez for 4 yards, but his left leg appeared to go out on him. The ball flew out of his hands, and Rogers picked it up and returned it for a score.

Holmes left the stadium in a golf cart, holding crutches, his left foot in a boot.

Ryan said Friday that the Jets would wait to put Revis on injured reserve until he has surgery in a few weeks, keeping him available in case New York goes to the Super Bowl. If the Jets play like this the rest of the way, getting to the playoffs will be a tall task.

Alex Smith was efficient, going 12 of 21 for 143 yards and no touchdowns, but more importantly, no interceptions. Sanchez had another poor game, going 13 of 29 for 103 yards and an interception.

"We knew Sanchez holds the ball a little longer and we felt we could get after him," Aldon Smith said. "We pretty much did."

New York finished with just 45 yards rushing.

The wildcat-style offense worked early ? but for the 49ers and not Tim Tebow and the Jets.

Kaepernick put the 49ers up 7-0 early in the second quarter, taking a direct snap and running untouched off left end for a 7-yard touchdown. Kaepernick also had a 17-yard run earlier in the game.

On the Jets' next possession, Tebow threw his first pass with New York, a short one over the middle to tight end Dedrick Epps, who was upended immediately by Dashon Goldson as the ball came loose. Rogers recovered, and the fumble call was upheld by video review. Epps injured his right knee on the play.

With just over a minute left in the first half, the 49ers were aggressive despite starting the drive at their 26. A 23-yard catch by Vernon Davis on first down got things rolling, and San Francisco ended the half on David Akers' 36-yard field goal.

Boos and some chants of "Tee-boww! Tee-boww!" rang out as the Jets went three-and-out for the second straight possession in the second half. It never got any better for New York.

NOTES: Mario Manningham, a Super Bowl hero with Giants before joining the Niners as free agent, returned to the Meadowlands and had three catches for 47 yards, plus a 28-yard gain on an end-around ... Akers also missed from 55 and 40 yards wide right ... New York lost fullback John Conner with a hamstring injury ... San Francisco got 62 yards rushing from Gore, 56 from Hunter and 50 from Kaepernick.

Democrats defend Susan Rice amid call for her resignation

Top Democrats are defending Ambassador Susan Rice after a top House Republican called for her resignation because of questionable statements she made about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has been hammered by Republican critics ever since she went on five interview shows on Sunday, Sept. 16 to say the attack on on the U.S. consulate was a "spontaneous" reaction to the outcry in Egypt over an anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, went so far as to say Rice should resign for intentionally misleading the American people about what really happened.

"I believe it was such a failure of foreign policy messaging and leadership, such a misstatement of facts as was known at the time," King said in an interview on CNN. "For her to go on all of those shows and, in effect, be our spokesman for the world and be misinforming the American people and our allies and countries around the world - somebody has to pay a price for this."

That prompted a quick response from Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"I'm deeply disturbed by efforts to find the politics instead of finding the facts in this debate," Kerry said in a written statement. "I'm particularly troubled by calls for Ambassador Rice's resignation. She is a remarkable public servant for whom the liberation of the Libyan people has been a personal issue and a public mission. She's an enormously capable person who has represented us at the United Nations with strength and character."

In the days immediately following the attack in Benghazi, several other U.S. officials, including White House press secretary Jay Carney, also suggested it was spontaneous attack. But more recently, U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, have said the incident was a pre-planned terrorist attack.

In a statement Friday, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called it a "deliberate and carefully planned terrorist attack" - although Clapper said U.S. intelligence agencies initially believed the attack was spontaneous and shared that information with the White House.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the House, also rallied to Rice's defense on Friday.

"Susan Rice is an exemplary public servant who has worked effectively on behalf of the U.S. and allies like Israel at the U.N.," Hoyer said in a written statement. "The loss of five Americans in Libya, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, is a horrible tragedy and we should be focused on bringing the perpetrators to justice, not playing politics. My understanding is that the information Ambassador Rice expressed reflected the intelligence community's most current assessment at that time."

In his statement, Kerry also pointed to an investigation ordered by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton into what happened in Benghazi.

"Everyone who cares about the five fallen Americans in Benghazi would do well to take a deep breath about what happened and allow Secretary Clinton's proactive, independent investigation to proceed," Kerry said. "Our committee in the Senate has unanimously asked that some highly detailed, highly specific questions be answered as part of the current investigation. Congress will have plenty of time to examine those answers, and to discern what happened in Benghazi once the investigation is fully underway and the facts become clear."

Experts: 4?leopards a week killed in India for skins

TRAFFIC

These leopard and tiger skins, with fake mouths, were photographed for sale in Myanmar, which neighbors India.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

While India has struggled to protect its declining tiger population, its leopards have been getting even less protection, or attention for that matter. A study released Friday recognized that flaw, estimating that at least four leopards are being killed each week, double the official reports, with their skins then smuggled to parts of Asia.

"Even though reports of illegal trade in leopard body parts are disturbingly frequent, the level of threat to leopards in the country has previously been unrecognized, and has fallen into our collective 'blind spot'," study co-author Rashid Raza, the India coordinator for the TRAFFIC wildlife trade monitoring network, said in a statement with the study.

At least 2,300 leopards were killed and then their body parts trafficked between 2001 and 2010, the study estimates.

Official reports of seizures account for nearly half that number, with the rest an estimate based on statistical analysis of "undetected trade" patterns by TRAFFIC,?which is funded by the World Wildlife Fund and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The WWF said it was time to focus more efforts on leopards. They have been "overshadowed by the trade in another of the country?s national icons, the tiger," noted WWF-India President Divyabhanusinh Chavda.

Mks Pasha / TRAFFIC

Leopards are widespread across India but not abundant, with experts agreeing that their population is in serious decline.

The report cited numerous cases of leopard skins from India that were for sale in nearby Myanmar, Laos and Tibetan regions of China.

Much of the illegal trade is thought to go through the "porous" border with Nepal, the experts said.

The report noted that while no reliable estimates of leopard numbers in India exist, they are considered widespread but not abundant.

"There has been a long standing anxiety among biologists and conservationists that the leopard in India is in serious decline," the experts stated.

TRAFFIC

This leopard skin was used to make a rug.

Leopards, like tigers, do have protected status in India, but many Indians consider both animals a threat. Some rural villagers have lost livestock, or even their lives, to leopards and tigers.?

The report's authors said that conflict isn't a reason to turn a blind eye to a potential extinction.

"There is still a disproportionate emphasis on the problem that the leopard causes in comparison to the crisis that the leopard is facing," the report stated.

The plight of India's tigers is probably even worse: just 1,700 are estimated to be left in the wild, nearly half the number from a decade ago and a fraction of the 100,000 estimated a century ago. Worldwide, only 4,000 tigers are thought to be left in the wild.

But other data suggests more leopards are being killed than tigers. The nonprofit Project Tiger reports?cases of leopards killed for skins far exceeded tiger poachings in each year between 1998 and 2003.

TRAFFIC and the WWF, after listing ways for India to crack down on trafficking, said a lack of action could lead leopards down that same path.

"Without an effective strategy to assess and tackle the threats posed by illegal trade," said Chavda, "the danger is that leopard numbers may decline rapidly as happened previously to the tiger."

Tourists among 19 killed in fiery Nepal plane crash

Nineteen people have died in a plane crash in Nepal. They were on their way to climb Mount Everest. The plane crashed into a field shortly after take-off from the capital Kathmandu. It was bound for Lukla, the starting point for a trek through the Himalayan mountains to the base camp of Mount Everest. ITV's Paul Davies reports.

By NBC News wire services

KATMANDU, Nepal -- A plane carrying trekkers to the Everest region crashed and caught fire just after takeoff Friday in Nepal's capital, killing 19 people.

The victims included British, Chinese and Nepali passengers, authorities said.

The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff, and Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman said the pilot appeared to have been trying to turn back.?

The crash site is only 547 yards from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area.

Reuters said it was a twin-engine, propeller-driven Dornier aircraft.

Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash and identify the bodies. Suman said he could not confirm if the plane was already on fire before it crashed.

Villagers forced back by flames
Cellphone video shot by locals showed the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and it appeared the pilot had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.

The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu.

Villagers were unable to approach the plane because of the fire and it took some time for firefighters to reach the area and bring the fire under control.

Nepal officials: 6 survive, 15 killed as plane hits mountain in Himalayas

Soldiers and police shifted through the crash wreckage looking for bodies and documents to help identify the victims.

Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.

Large numbers of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The charred bodies were taken by vans to the hospital morgue.

Gateway to Everest
The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear on Friday morning, and it was one of the first flights to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport operated normally.

The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

The 10 Worst States For Retirees - Retirement Homes

There?s no shortage of retirement advisors online who recommend the best cities, states and even countries for retirement. If you?re looking for lower income taxes, there are places for that. If you want miles of sandy beaches, there are places for that.

And if you dream of being close to friends and family, you?re probably there already. But are all retirement destinations created equal? If there are excellent retirement destinations out there, what are the worst?

As reported recently by AARP.org, the 10 worst states for retirees are:

1/ Illinois
2/ California
3/ New York
4/ Rhode Island
5/ New Jersey
6/ Ohio
7/ Wisconsin
8/ Massachusetts
9/ Connecticut
10/ Nevada

The reasons for these 10 states varied, but they ranged from the poor financial health of the Illinois and California state governments, high property taxes in New York and Wisconsin, unemployment and cold temperatures in Ohio, and a high volume of home foreclosures in Nevada. As well, Social Security in Connecticut is taxed, so people who rely on that as a source of income don?t keep the entire amount.

But if you?re looking for a beachfront home in California, or if you want to be close to your family in Ohio, then don?t let a list deter you. But when considering relocating, think about all factors before you move.

Mars rover finds first evidence of water: a river of it

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Sep 27, 2012 8:33pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, dispatched to learn if the most Earth-like planet in the solar system was suitable for microbial life, has found clear evidence its landing site was once awash in water, a key ingredient for life, scientists said Thursday.

Curiosity, a roving chemistry laboratory the size of a small car, touched down on August 6 inside a giant impact basin near the planet's equator. The primary target for the two-year mission is a three-mile (five-km) -high mound of layered rock rising from the floor of Gale Crater.

Scientists suspect the mound, known as Mount Sharp, is the remains of sediment that once completely filled the crater. Analysis of a slab of rock located between the crater's north rim and the base of Mount Sharp indicate a fast-moving stream of water once flowed there.

Images taken by Curiosity and released on Thursday show rounded stones cemented into the rock, which rises like a piece of jack-hammered sidewalk from the planet's surface.

The stones inside the rock are too big to have been moved by wind, Curiosity scientist Rebecca Williams, with the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, told reporters on a conference call.

"The consensus of the science team is that these are water-transported gravel in a vigorous stream," she said.

The rock is believed to be from the floor of an ancient stream which was once between ankle- and knee-deep.

The analysis is based on telephoto images taken by the rover, which is en route to a patch of land named Glenelg where three different types of rock intersect.

Scientists have not yet decided if the slab of rock warrants a chemical analysis, or if there are better targets for Curiosity to look for the building blocks of life and the minerals to preserve it.

"The question about habitability goes beyond the simple observation of water on Mars," said lead scientist John Grotzinger at the California Institute of Technology.

"Certainly flowing water is a place where microorganisms could have lived. This particular kind of rock may or may not be a good place to preserve those components that we associate with a habitable environment," he said.

The $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes.

Venturi announces 300HP, ?300K America all-terrain EV, coming in 2014

Image

If you feel the need to rapidly hit the great outdoors without despoiling it, Venturi just may have your ride -- provided you have about $400,000 to spare. The company just launched the America EV at the Paris Auto Show, packing a 300HP powerplant, 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and projected 200 mile range to go along with the breathtaking price tag. Venturi's touting the car as more than just a smooth pavement flyer though, saying that it has a go-anywhere attitude with its high stance, generous clearance and tough carbon-fiber chassis. Still, if you want to go fast, the car can hit a top speed of 120 mph, and once you've burned off all the volts, can be fast charged in four hours, or ten from a 230V socket. Despite its off-road gumption, the rear-driver has considerable competition for sports EV dollars -- and a smooth road to its 2014 availability target is no given.

Connecticut Conference of Municipalities: Towns Too Dependent on ...

Connecticut?s 169 municipalities have gotten little increased financial help from the state in the last five years and remain overly dependent on state aid, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities says.

CCM, the main lobbying group for local communities, released a bulletin Monday to candidates for the state?s General Assembly urging them to make education funding a priority in the coming year, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

State aid for towns stands at about $3 billion per year, while Connecticut?s 169 towns collectively raise about $9 billion annually from local property taxes, James Finley, CCM?s executive director, told the Mirror. State aid to towns has remained relatively flat over the last five years. When you factor in the rate of inflation, that means towns have actually lost financial ground during that five-year period, Finley added.

The state aid figures represent an over-dependence by towns on local property taxes, something the General Assembly should address by closing shortfalls in education funding to towns, Finley said.

"The key to property tax relief is education finance reform," Finley told the Mirror. "The overdependence on the property tax is unsustainable, and hometown Connecticut is in desperate need of revenue assistance."

Finding Out What'S Right for YOU ? Health Coaching | Weight Loss ...

?

Article by Julie-Ann Amos

The newspapers, magazines television news broadcasts and even the internet contain on a daily basis some information or other about how our Health and well-being are threatened. Yet, the message the research, pop-science and advice are giving is very confusing and even contradictory. You should or should not eat eggs. Drinking low calorie drinks is either good for you because they act to prevent tooth decay or bad because they are replete with carcinogens.

The sun helps your body obtain vitamin D, but it is bad for you since exposure causes melanoma. How in the world can one person sort out the truth from the fantasy or completely bogus or over-reactive science? We need to do so if we want to minimize the risk of any potential harm and live a happy and healthy life.

A plethora of information, all claiming to be both accurate and the latest on subjects running the gamut from weight loss to sundry medical issues are available courtesy of television programs, newspapers, books and magazines. Much of this has been proven to be not only poorly informed but also downright dangerous. Moreover, such articles never take into consideration such individualistic characteristics as medical history, present state of health and fitness or even think about lifestyle. It stands to reason that what is beneficial for one person may not be for another. When you are dealing with your health, you do not need a one-solution-fits-all but a tailored response.

The current state of everyone?s physical well-being as well as alarming statistics on health issues and heightened awareness through the media, have resulted in more and more people stopping to consider their fitness levels and lifestyle. This has produced an increase in the demand for coaches in health. This provides people not only with the chance to access advice specific to their needs but also to have someone to back them up, motivate and provide support ? an online health coach. This makes it easier to prepare and go through the necessary lifestyle adjustments to be successful. BAE vulnerable to break-up or U.S. bid if merger fails

," said an equities manager at a British investment house holding a stake in BAE.

"The conspiracy theorists say BAE are hoping to flush out a bid from one of the U.S. prime contractors."

Such plans could, however, be scuppered because of the U.S. government's reluctance to see more consolidation among their prime contractors and competition reduced. Some analysts believe this attitude could change given that BAE is one of the biggest foreign suppliers of weapons to the Pentagon.

"BAE's strategy has taken it deep into UK and U.S. defense but both of those markets are in deep trouble over the medium-term but at the moment doing nothing is not really an option for BAE," said Societe Generale defense analyst Zafar Khan.

If the merger falls foul of the many political and regulatory obstacles in its way, BAE will be left stranded and Ian King, its chief executive of four years, will face tough questions about his vision for the company, both past and present.

"BAE doesn't have a 'Plan B' as such, it's the deal with EADS or back to trying to drive growth from defense and cyber, which is pretty limited," said a source close to the British contractor.

CYBER SECURITY

In its most recent annual report BAE Chairman Dick Olver said the group's main strategic aims included developing its export business, building on its large geographic footprint and pushing growth at its cyber security arm.

"BAE Systems maintains a well-defined strategy with a defense focus at its core, but with the flexibility to adapt to changes in the business landscape," wrote Olver.

"BAE Systems will continue to keep its strategy under review and will move to adjust its portfolio of businesses where it is in the interests of shareholders to do so."

BAE is precluded from making statements that relate to the proposed EADS merger because of UK takeover panel rules.

In 2006, BAE sold its remaining 20 percent stake in Airbus for $3.5 billion to fund its big move into the then booming U.S. defense industry.

It had created a standalone U.S. business, BAE Inc, a year earlier which has since become one of the largest suppliers of weapons to the United States.

BAE Inc has grown through acquisitions and now competes toe-to-toe with prime U.S. contractors such as Lockheed, Northrop Grumman and Boeing . It reported revenues of $14.4 billion last year - around half of BAE total group sales.

"If a merger doesn't happen BAE are basically in play and a U.S. tie-up is possible but in that scenario I think BAE should sell its U.S. business," said Societe Generale's Khan, who believes that BAE Inc could fetch up to 10 billion pounds ($16.20 billion) on a debt free basis.

BAE Systems has a market capitalization of 10.7 billion pounds and debt of 1.23 billion pounds as of June 2012.

BAE Inc, however, expects U.S. defense spending cuts to hit its business in the coming years so any sale would need to happen sooner rather than later.

The United States, by far the largest market for weapons, already has plans in place to cut $487 billion from its defense budget over the next decade, while Congress could also make a further $500 billion in military spending cuts in January under a process known as sequestration.

DEEP TROUBLE

EADS is keen on a deal to balance its civil aviation exposure with more defense work, while BAE would gain access to planemaker Airbus, allowing it to diversify at a time when defense budgets around the world are contracting.

In recent years BAE has been throwing cash into its cyber security business, Detica, to help offset budget cuts and contract losses across its more lucrative traditional business of fighter jets and warships. This has failed to plug the hole.

BAE bought Detica in 2008 and has since pushed the cyber crime-fighting business into the commercial arena. It handles data and national security information for governments and is expanding further into telecoms, media and financial services.

EUROFIGHTER CONSORTIUM

Part of the Eurofighter consortium that lost out on the sale of 126 jets to India earlier this year, BAE expects to deliver only modest growth in 2012 - and that hinges on talks to renegotiate a jets deal with Saudi Arabia - one of its five 'home markets'.

BAE has cut thousands of jobs in recent years to combat spending cuts. Headcount at its land and armaments business, where sales fell 40 percent last year reflecting the end of a key vehicle program and reduced military operations, has halved since 2009. It plans to cut at least 2,000 jobs as Typhoon orders slow.

"By considering this deal, has BAE admitted that focusing on U.S. defense and cyber security was flawed and won't deliver real growth in the medium term? It looks like it," said a fund manager holding BAE stock, who wished to remain anonymous.

If the deal with EADS goes through, BAE's past forays into the automotive, construction and support services sectors in search of growth and reduced reliance on the defense sector will become a distant memory.

Since its privatization in the 1980s, British Aerospace, as BAE was then, has bought and sold mass market UK carmaker Rover, Dutch construction firm Ballast Nedam, German naval systems business Atlas Elektronik and its own aerostructures arm.

BAE is still chopping and changing today. It has hired consultancy firm LEK to review options for its British shipbuilding business including the possible closure or sale of one of its three shipyards in Scotland and southern England.

The British government holds a ?golden share' in BAE, granting it the right to block any deal, although Prime Minister David Cameron has made positive noises about the merger. If a U.S. suitor made a play for BAE Cameron would be unlikely to block a deal because such a deal would only strengthen Britain's ?special relationship' with the United States.

In a column in Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper senior Conservative MP Bernard Jenkin urged the British government to "use its golden share to force the break-up of BAE, to ensure that key assets are owned by UK companies, and to create a more fragmented, entrepreneurial and creative set of businesses, to serve our interests and to export to the world."

Espirito Santo analyst Ed Stacey believes it would be difficult for King, who has a strained relationship with many of BAE's top shareholders, to remain as CEO if the EADS deal fails.

"It would be tough for King to go out on a roadshow saying he is completely committed to his strategy and is happy with his portfolio if the EADS deal doesn't happen," he said.

BAE's shares are at 321.30 pence, back below their price when news of the deal was leaked. They initially jumped but fell back on concern about political and regulatory barriers.

The main hurdle for King, though, is just getting the deal done one way or another.

"The risk is that everyone walks away and BAE is left like the emperor with no clothes. If they do a deal with EADS, King has won them a massive get-out-of-jail card. If they don't, the company is very exposed," said the BAE investor and equity manager.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept review, specs ... - Auto Spectator

The Nissan TeRRA SUV concept, to be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show on Sep 27, combines two outstanding Nissan strengths ? SUVs and EVs ? in a vehicle that is equally in its element off-road in the wild or gliding silently through a sophisticated urban setting.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

With an innovative 4x4 fuel-cell electric powertrain and an athletic exterior that projects an unforgettable presence beyond its compact dimensions, TeRRA takes sustainable motoring into exciting new territory.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Envisioned as "the one and only Zero Emission SUV," TeRRA builds on Nissan's success with urban-relevant SUVs and crossovers like Murano and Qashqai and asserts that its zero-emission expertise extends all the way to fuel cells. Designed as a functional and flexible choice for tomorrow's youthful, "always on" consumers, TeRRA answers their aspiration for eco-friendliness along with a secure driving feel under any road conditions.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

"Our challenge was to take Nissan's strength in SUVs and crossovers forward into the zero-emissions era, fuel cells being our new frontier in zero emission mobility" said Francois Bancon, Nissan's devision general manager of product strategy and planning. "Not big and tough for the desert, the aim was a new approach to SUVs that's relevant to urban life. The unique diagonal seating layout that offers an exciting driving experience thanks to exceptional visibility that creates a sense of being in control under any conditions."

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Tough on the outside, warm and welcoming within
"We took our inspiration from the lifestyles of youthful customers in Northern Europe," said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer. "We heard their aspiration for sustainable mobility that can take them anywhere they want to go."

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

"Exploring our imagination of that natural space with the exterior, we have redefined the power of the SUV heritage in a much more athletic way, one that expresses our vision of the zero emissions future," Nakamura said.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

"You have the big tires, high belt-line, thick pillars and thin side windows of the SUV vocabulary. But with a slender waist between pronounced fenders above the wheel arches, and a sculptured hood, we've created an 'Implied Structure' of musculature under the skin. Sharp corners, short overhangs and sculptured lamps contribute to a clean, confident stance. An aerodynamically flat body pan in an eye-catching color, protecting the full length of the underside, completes the image of what we call 'Modern Toughness.'"

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Open the door and exterior toughness gives way to a surprisingly warm and welcoming interior. The door panel is a sculpted fusion of blond wood trim and colored acrylic, layered in an intriguing pattern. Ringing the cabin at shoulder height is a metal frame that gives TeRRA's occupants a feeling of security. The wood/metal contrast continues across the dashboard, a beechwood-acrylic fusion that exudes a soft warmth. On the driver's side, the steering and instrument console gently tapers out toward the driver, barely interrupting the clean lines of the dash.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Seamless digital space?
Facing the driver is a unique instrument cluster. It's an electronic tablet ? just like today's popular portable devices ? that serves as an "intelligent key." The driver docks it when entering the car and removes it when leaving. When docked in TeRRA, the tablet's default view displays speed and other key performance indicators. But the driver can easily toggle to entertainment, communications, navigation and other views. Outside the car it provides all the functions we expect from a tablet, plus it stays continually in touch with the vehicle. The idea is seamless information and communication, on the road and everywhere else.

?offers a fresh perspective on the road
TeRRA's seamlessly connected driver sits front and almost center in a unique diagonal layout that positions rear passengers over the shoulders of those in front, rather than directly behind.

"For the driver to be nearly centered, not seated off to one side, provides a fresh, enlightened perspective with exceptional visibility," Nakamura said. "The diagonal layout allows all passengers to share the vision of adventures up ahead."

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

The seats themselves express a hexagonal motif that is carried through various aspects of the design. Fold the three passenger seats down and you notice that TeRRA's cabin deck is completely flat, presenting no obstacles to carrying bikes, kayaks or assemble-yourself furniture from Scandinavia. This flat surface is a function of the remarkably compact powertrain package that creates the possibility of this zero-emission concept.

Power, four-by-four; emissions, zero
Although TeRRA is presented as a design concept, not a technical exhibit, its proposed 4x4 fuel cell electric powertrain is far from imaginary.

Powering the front wheels is the electric propulsion system currently featured in the Nissan LEAF. In each back wheel, providing all-wheel power as needed, is an in-wheel electric motor, based on the working prototypes featured in three successive PIVO concepts. As no drive shafts are required to power the rear wheels, there is no hump in the cabin floor or on the underbody. This allows for the flat cabin deck and the underside bodypan.

Under the hood is ample space for Nissan's proprietary hydrogen fuel cell stack: a flat, highly compact unit that features world-leading power density of 2.5kW/L. The latest in a series of Nissan fuel cells since 1996, the stack costs just one-sixth of its 2005 predecessor as the need for expensive precious metals has been slashed to one-quarter of the previous level.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

TeRRA is purely a concept car, but it signals that Nissan is ready to mass-produce fuel cell electric vehicles whenever hydrogen becomes widely available.

How Living Green Can Save You Money | Top TV Stuff

How Living Green Can Save You Money

The idea of ?going green? has very unfairly been associated with only being extremely expensive and only truly possible for the wealthy. This might be true if you think going green is limited to building a brand new state of the art green home with foam insulation, triple-pane windows, and solar panels. However, there are ways that you can live in a more environmentally friendly manner that will make a difference and actually save you money.

hang clothes out to dry

Leave the drying up to mother nature and save energy

Conserving Water and Energy

Even without overhauling your energy systems or buying a new water heater, you can conserve water and electricity in your home. This can be accomplished by becoming more conscious of the energy and water that is wasted in your household. By turning off electronics, and unplugging them, while they are not in use, you can conserve significant amounts of electricity. Of course, you can see a larger difference by using energy efficient electronics and using products such as water aerators and low flow shower heads that will reduce the amount of water you use.

Conserving your water and energy usage not only helps the environment, but it also helps your budget. As you?ve most likely already noticed, the cost of energy is rising across the country. As you take steps to conserve in your home, you will see these monthly expenses decrease.

Buy or Borrow Used Items

Before you spend your money buying a brand new product, ask yourself if you could find the same product used, or borrow it from a friend. It is possible to save remarkable amounts of money by purchasing used cars, furniture, electronics, clothing, and appliances. If you purchase from a trusted second hand store, you can purchase high quality items at half the cost of new items. It is an item that you are only going to use once, such as a dress or a power tool, why not ask around to find one that you can borrow?

When you buy new items, the products go through extensive manufacturing, packaging, and transportation services. The journey that the new product takes to reach you, the consumer, is damaging to the environment. Also, if you do not purchase the used items, these items will likely be disposed of, possibly in an already overflowing landfill.

Choose Locally Grown and Organic Foods

Produce also goes through extensive packaging and transportation to reach your supermarket shelves. You could be purchasing fruits and vegetables that are grown hundreds of miles away. This means that the foods had to travel on highways for hours, burning gallons upon gallons of fuel, to make it to your grocery store.

Many people think that organic foods are much too expensive, but this is not necessarily true if you shop at the right places. If you visit your local farmer?s market or food co-op, you can find reasonably priced locally grown fresh produce. The locally grown fruits also have the benefits of being free of the harsh chemicals that are used to preserve the grocery store produce.

If protecting the environment is not incentive enough for you to adopt green living habits, consider all of these ways that going green can save you money while providing quality solutions.

Deer Obama: Surprise campaign-sign vandal caught on video

An Austin, Texas, couple were convinced a political vandal was at work, showing up in the middle of the night to damage their yard sign endorsing President Obama's re-election campaign. But after contacting police, Beth and Tom Priem were shocked to discover the guilty party was actually a "Republican" deer.

Austin NBC affiliate KXAN reports that the mystery began in mid-September, when the Priems found holes punched through their Obama sign four days in a row. It seemed like a personal attack, as none of their yard signs for other political candidates had sustained any damage.

And further adding to the mystery, the Priems have several politically active neighbors, all of whom support Republican candidates and none of whom suffered any damage to their yard signs.

The Austin couple then called police, who were at a loss as to who might be the culprit. But it was actually the family's dog that first spotted the culprit, barking at the family's living room window and drawing Beth and Tom to the scene.

"Apparently, we have a Republican deer in our neighborhood!" Tom told KXAN. "The funny thing is, I haven't seen any other signs damaged. The people directly across the street have four signs; the person across the street and to the left has two, and the next house to the left h as one. We can't figure out why the deer is attacking our signs."

And since this situation is not likely to be resolved through more conventional political debate, the Priems have decided to take direct action instead.

"We're going to put them up closer to the house, and hopefully if it's not right in their path they'll leave it alone," Tom said.

iPhone 5 camera powered by Sony sensor

Sony has been on a roll with its camera image sensors, and a close look by ChipWorks shows that the iPhone 5 uses one of Sony's products for its main camera.

(Credit: ChipWorks)

A close-up photo shows the Sony brand name on the 8-megapixel sensor at the heart of the camera.

It's not a big surprise: Sony is very competitive with image sensors these days, and former Sony CEO Howard Stringer let slip earlier this year that Sony was supplying camera technology to Apple.

But the iPhone 5 has two cameras, of course. The lesser one, a front-facing camera for videoconferencing software, such as Microsoft's Skype or Apple's FaceTime, uses a sensor from Sony competitor Omnivision, ChipWorks found.

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

21 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

Microsoft issues security patches for Flash vulnerabilities in Windows 8 and Internet Explorer

As promised, Microsoft is issuing a security patch for a Flash vulnerability on Windows 8 in Internet Explorer 10. Though the operating system has yet to see its official public release, researchers testing the RTM version found a bug that could cause Flash to crash and allow for attackers to take control of a user's machine. Additionally, the company is rolling out an update to address a security hole in Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 on Windows XP -- and IE 9 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista -- which left the door open for hackers to spread malware via a specially designed Flash animation. Both security patches are available via Microsoft's Windows Update service.
