Bon Rappetite: Inside joke goes viral, becomes a cookbook | Food ...

Back in late January, rumblings and blog posts began to appear about what appeared to be the most ridiculous ? and most genius ? new restaurant concept Atlanta had ever seen: Bon Rappetite, the world?s first hip-hop restaurant. Opened in East Atlanta, the website included contact information, restaurant hours, a list of upcoming events, and a menu comprised of hip-hop themed puns, like the Wu-Tang Clams or Lil? Kimchi. This looked too good to be true.

And, in fact, it was.

Bon Rappetite is the brain child of social media marketing firm Baby Robot Industries co-founders Everett Steele and wife Bunny Mcintosh. The website began as an inside joke a year earlier, the result of round(s) of beers and a list of rap-themed puns scribbled onto a bar napkin. Steele and Mcintosh emailed the joke site out to a few friends and then forgot about it.

Next thing they know, Scoutmob stumbles onto the site and posts about it, then Creative Loafing picks it up. Within days, CNN and The Huffington Post have run stories on them, their server is crashing from thousands of hits per day, phone ringing off the hook with diners asking if they take reservations, and their inside joke has its own Urbanspoon page.

Well, what was once only a joke-gone-viral has gotten a little more rizzle. Building off of the interest generated by the faux-site, Steele teamed up with co-writer Chris Hassiotis to turn the puns into real recipes and launch Bon Rappetite: The Cookbook. Now, you can whip up dishes like the Too $hort Rib Tacos or Queen LaPizza at home.

This Saturday, March 31st, Baby Robot is hosting the official Bon Rappetite launch party at the Graveyard Tavern, including free drinks from 9 p.m.-10 p.m. and performances from frequent The Roots guest MC, Greg Porn, Atlanta?s BNMC, Deuce Ducartier, Small Eyez, Stealth, Rogue, Blonju and Ina Escobar, with DJ Mudfish.

The cookbook is available for purchase online for $19.99 and 10% of the proceeds go to benefit the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Crocodiles trump T. rex as heavyweight bite-force champions, new study shows

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Paul M. Gignac, Ph.D., Instructor of Research, Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and colleagues at Florida State University and in California and Australia, found in a study of all 23 living crocodilian species that crocodiles can kill with the strongest bite force measured for any living animal. The study also revealed that the bite forces of the largest extinct crocodilians exceeded 23,000 pounds, a force two-times greater than the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex.

Their data, reported online in PLoS One, contributes to the understanding of performance in animals from the past and provides unprecedented insight into how evolution has shaped that performance.

In "Insights into the Ecology and Evolutionary Success of Crocodilians Revealed through Bite-Force and Tooth-Pressure Experimentation," the researchers detail their examination of the bite force and tooth pressure of every species of alligator, crocodile, caiman, and gharial. Led by Project Director Gregory Erickson, Ph.D., Professor of Biological Science at Florida State University, the study took more than a decade to complete and required a diverse team of croc handlers and scientists.

"Crocodiles and alligators are the largest, most successful reptile hunters alive today, and our research illustrates one of the key ways they have maintained that crown," says Dr. Gignac.

The team roped 83 adult alligators and crocodiles and placed a force meter between their back teeth and recorded the bite force. They found that gators and crocs have pound-for-pound comparable maximal bite forces, despite different snouts and teeth. Contrary to previous evolutionary thinking, they determined that bite force was correlated with body size but showed surprisingly little correlation with tooth form, diet, jaw shape, or jaw strength.

Dr. Gignac emphasizes that the study results suggest that once crocodilians evolved their remarkable capacity for force-generation, further adaptive modifications involved changes in body size and the dentition to modify forces and pressures for different diets.

The team has been contacted by editors of the "Guinness Book of World Records" inquiring about the data.

Among living crocodilians, the bite-force champion is a 17-foot saltwater croc, with a force measured at 3,700 pounds.

"This kind of bite is like being pinned beneath the entire roster of the New York Knicks," says Dr. Gignac, illustrating the tremendous force displayed by the living creatures. "But with bone-crushing teeth."

The research was funded by the National Geographic Society and the Florida State University College of Arts and Sciences.

"This remains merely a hypothesis, an untested but logical idea," Carrie Wall, a graduate student in marine biology at the University of South Florida?who led the study, told me in an email today.

"We can't say (and haven't said) with any certainty that that is in fact the source of what we have termed the 6 kHz Sound," she added.

But all signs do appear to point in the direction of herring farts. Such sounds have been descried before, noted Wall, who sent me in the direction of a post on Improbable Research,?the organization that hands out the Ig Nobels. Two papers on herring farts earned that distinguished prize in 2004.

"Our hypothesis is potentially likely as menhaden and other species related to herring are present in our study area and the 6 kHz Sound has similar characteristics to the findings of the previous research," Wall told me.

The "6 KHz Sound" she refers to are at the least "three unknown biological sounds" documented by their one week survey along the West Florida Shelf, Wall and her colleagues report this week in the journal Marine Ecology Research.

The mystery sound is in addition to the detection of the more familiar grunts and whistles of red grouper and toadfish that typically make sound in the range from 100 Hz to 2000 Hz.

"6 kHz is far above that frequency range, suggesting that an alternative method of sound production (such as gas release) is responsible for this sound," Wall said.?

"However, without further research, we won't know for sure."

World News - Syria accepts Annan peace plan, but clashes continue

Syrian state television broadcast footage of President Bashar-al-Assad making a rare public appearance in the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs, the heart of the uprising and where his crackdown has been most brutal. ITN's John Ray reports.

Syria accepted a cease-fire drawn up by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan on Tuesday, but the diplomatic breakthrough was swiftly overshadowed by intense clashes between government soldiers and rebels that sent bullets flying into Lebanon.

Opposition members accuse President Bashar Assad of agreeing to the plan to stall for time as his troops make a renewed push to kill off bastions of dissent. And the conflict just keeps getting deadlier: The U.N. said the death toll has grown to more than 9,000, a sobering assessment of a devastating year-old crackdown on the uprising that shows no sign of ending.

Annan's announcement that Syria had accepted his peace plan was met with deep skepticism.

"We are not sure if it's political maneuvering or a sincere act," said Louay Safi, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council. "We have no trust in the current regime. ... We have to see that they have stopped killing civilians."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Assad's decision to accept the plan was only a first step. "We will continue to judge the Syrian regime by its practical actions, not by its often empty words," he said.

Fmr. National Security Adviser to President Carter Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski joins Morning Joe to discuss America's relationship with Russia, the war in Afghanistan, and reports that Syria has accepted a U.N.-backed peace plan.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Assad must act quickly to convince the world he is serious about peace by "silencing his guns and allowing humanitarian aid to get in."

On a two-day visit to Beijing, Annan told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he faced a long and difficult task in his mission to end fighting in Syria, but global cooperation with China and other countries was the only way to do it.

"I indicated that I had received a response from the Syrian government and will be making it public today, which is positive, and we hope to work with them to translate it into action," Annan told reporters in Beijing after meeting Wen.

"I have a six-point plan which the Security Council has endorsed, dealing with issues of political discussions, withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, humanitarian assistance being allowed in unimpeded, release of prisoners, freedom of movement and access to journalists to go in and out," he said. "So we will need to see how we move ahead and implement this agreement that they have accepted."

Finally, UN reaches agreement over Syria efforts

However, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, expressed skepticism about the development, saying it would be best to look for action, not words from Assad.

Ford told lawmakers in Washington that he had no information beyond the press reports of the development.

"We will see now in the days ahead what exactly Assad has said,'' Ford said at a hearing on human rights in Syria.

The diplomat, who left Syria last month because of the violence there, added: "I have to tell you that my own experience with him is you want to see steps on the ground and not just take his word at face value."

The United Nations said on Tuesday that more than 9,000 civilians have been killed in the Syrian government's year-long assault on protesters opposed to Assad, an increase of nearly 1,000 over its previous estimate.

"Violence on the ground has continued unabated, resulting in scores of people killed and injured," Robert Serry, the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, told the 15-nation Security Council.

"Credible estimates put the total death toll since the beginning of the uprising one year ago to more than 9,000," he said. "It is urgent to stop the fighting and prevent a further violent escalation of the conflict."

The Syrian opposition, meanwhile, welcomed the government's acceptance of a U.N. peace plan, a member of the Syrian National Council said.

Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.

Bassma Kodmani told The Associated Press by telephone that "we welcome all acceptance by the regime of a plan that could allow the repression and bloodbath to stop."

She is a Paris-based member of the opposition Syrian National Council.

"We hope that we can move toward a peace process," she said.

Incursion into Lebanon
Meanwhile, Syrian troops advanced into north Lebanon on Tuesday, destroying farm buildings and clashing with Syrian rebels who had taken refuge there, residents told Reuters.

"More than 35 Syrian soldiers came across the border and started to destroy houses," said Abu Ahmed, 63, a resident of the rural mountain area of al-Qaa.

Another resident told Reuters that the soldiers, some traveling in armored personnel vehicles, fired rocket-propelled grenades and exchanged heavy machine-gun fire with rebels.

Regional English-language news channel Al-Jazeera has previously reported an escalation in tensions along the border. It said residents claimed the Syrian military planted landmines close to inhabited areas while, in early October, a Syrian army tank reportedly fired shells at Lebanese military targets inside Lebanon's borders.

Any movement into Lebanese territory would escalate a conflict that already is spiraling toward civil war. There are concerns the violence could cause a broader conflagration by sucking in neighboring countries.

Officials: Iranian arms used against Syria protesters

Annan called for Beijing's support and advice, according to a pool report.

"And I know you've already been helpful but this is going to be a long difficult task and I am sure that together we can make a difference," Annan told Wen.

Annan's trip to China followed a similar one in Russia, where he asked Moscow to back his mission to end fighting in Syria.

Russia and China have shielded Assad from U.N. Security Council condemnation by vetoing two Western-backed resolutions over the bloodshed, but approved a Security Council statement this week endorsing Annan's mission.

Report: Syria leader's wife says she's 'real dictator'

However, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Syrian people, not foreign powers, should decide their own fate.

Russia has said Annan has its full support and that his mission could be the last chance to avoid a protracted and bloody civil war but would need more time.

"I would like the decision on the fate of the Syrian state, society, political system and people to be taken not by the respected leaders of world powers, even by those acting in good faith, but by the Syrian people themselves, by all the levels of the Syrian society," Medvedev said at the end of a nuclear security summit in Seoul.

US Airways is?reportedly?in talks with creditors for American Airlines about a possible merger -- a deal that would reduce the number of major big national airlines to just three.

According to published reports and industry analysts, US Airways has put forward plans to take over?American, which is in the process of restructuring its operations through bankruptcy.

The goal, according to a Bloomberg report, is to complete a deal before American?s parent company AMR exits bankruptcy proceedings. AMR, which filed for bankruptcy protection?in November, recently received permission to extend the filing deadline for its reorganization plan until Sept. 28 and said it plans to ask for its labor union contracts to be voided.

US Airways is likely to put forward the argument that the two airlines combined will be stronger than if they remained as separate companies, said Ray Neidl, an aerospace analyst with Maxim Group.

The airline industry has been going through a period of consolidation, with the most recent merger clinched between United Airlines and Continental Airlines, who joined forces in 2010. Delta Air Lines reached a deal to combine with Northwest Airlines in 2008.

?This isn?t a marriage made in heaven, like Northwest and Delta, or Continental and United,? Neidl said. ?But US Airways is the last girl on the dance floor right now.?

US Airways CEO Doug Parker has made no secret of his desire to join with American, telling reporters this week that advisers have been hired to consider a bid. But during the current bankruptcy period American is barred from filing competing?plans, such as a merger proposal.

Meanwhile US Airways is buying up Internet domain names reflecting a potential merger.

A?spokesman for US Airways confirmed that company registered domain addresses that include the names of both airlines, including usairways-american.com and american-usairways.com, according to The Associated Press. US Airways stock was up 2 percent to $7.48 a share.

A merger between American and US Airways would give American an improved presence in the East, where it has been squeezed out by Delta and United, said?Neidl. It would also give American a sturdier presence in the West, given US Airways? strong presence in Phoenix, Ariz., he said.

The deal would come as the U.S. airline industry is enjoying an upswing, Neidl added.

Consolidation has been a big help, he said, and airlines have done a good job of controlling costs. They?ve also been able to tap into new revenue sources, such as charging for luggage. However, one worry for the industry going forward is the rising price of oil.

?Hey Geraldo, Black kids have gotten shot not wearing hoodies. Dude, that's just dumb.?

Rivera stirred up a firestorm when he said on Friday?s ?Fox & Friends? that the black Florida teen might not be dead had he not worn a hoodie the night he was shot by a community watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

?I believe that George Zimmerman, the overzealous neighborhood watch captain, should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law, and if he is criminally liable he should be prosecuted. But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies,? Rivera said.

?I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin?s death as George Zimmerman was.?

He added: "You have to recognize that this whole stylizing yourself as a gangsta, you?re going to?be a gangsta-wannabe, well people are going to perceive you as a menace."

The outspoken ?Geraldo at Large? host, who is Latino, expressed similar sentiments in a column Friday titled, ?Trayvon Martin Would Be Alive but for His Hoodie.?

"To Geraldo Rivera we say this: American Apparel sells millions of hoodies each year in every color you can imagine, to every type of person you can imagine?pink hoodies to toddlers, black and navy hoodies to businessmen and successful entrepreneurs, as well as plenty of college students of all backgrounds and everyone else in between. We even sell hoodies for dogs. To say that this classic garment implies that its owner is a dangerous criminal to be 'feared' is absolutely ridiculous. Dalglish admits Liverpool must learn from meltdown

Kenny Dalglish admits Liverpool must learn from their stunning meltdown against QPR if they are to avoid their Premier League season drifting to a disappointing end.

Dalglish's side threw away a two-goal lead in the final 13 minutes to lose 3-2 to struggling QPR at Loftus Road on Wednesday.

And the Reds boss admits he is concerned his side may suffer in the FA Cup semi-final, when they face Everton or Sunderland at Wembley, if they continue to fail to close games out.

But Dalglish was puzzled as to how Liverpool managed to go from being in control thanks to goals from Sebastian Coates and Dirk Kuyt, to leaving west London with nothing after Shaun Derry, Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie had hit back.

Dalglish, who had admitted ahead of the game that his side need to win all 10 of their fixtures if they were to hope for a top four spot, said: "I don't think anybody saw it coming.

"We started fantastically, the only thing that was missing was a bit of luck in front of goal.

"We could have been three or four-nil up by half time. There is not much more we can say, we don't have any answers as to what happened. We have to find them if we are to learn from it.

"The main thing we have to learn is that it is not over until it's over.

"There was a fair bit of feeling about how we would approach the game and how the players were feeling after qualifying for the FA Cup semi-final.

"Most of the game we were dominant, professional. They did concentrate for most of the game and we were constructive in so many parts of it. But QPR have walked away with three points.

"We never got what we deserved, but that is life, I suppose. I can't explain it."

For QPR, both Mackie and manager Mark Hughes believe the result could be the catalyst for survival.

The win was only their second in 17 games and took them out of the bottom three and two points clear of the relegation zone.

Hughes said: "It could be a defining moment. I think we have to make sure it is. We might look back at tonight and say this is where it all turned for us.

"It's huge in terms of the belief we can take out of it, but it is important we look to the weekend and make sure it doesn't go to waste."

Goal-hero Mackie added: "You could see the reaction of the fans, that changes our season now. It was a great performance and we really dug in."

Liverpool had started the game well and could have been 4-0 up inside the opening 12 minutes, as Luis Suarez, Martin Skrtel and Kuyt had chances denied.

Coates fired Liverpool in front nine minutes after the break with a spectacular overhead kick, before Kuyt latched onto the rebound from Paddy Kenny's save off Stewart Downing's shot to double the visitors' lead.

But Derry rose to meet Adel Taarabt's corner to head in his first goal for QPR, before Cisse did the same to level the scores against his old employers.

And Mackie took advantage of some sloppy defending in stoppage time to race onto Luke Young's through-ball and score what could be a crucial goal for both ends of the table.

Hughes added: "I have possibly have had a comeback like this as a manager but I can't think of one. Tonight is right up there and I think everyone sensed the emotion and significance of the result.

"We may look back at this result and say this is where it all changed for us. We have to make sure this is the case."

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Sean Payton's many motivational ploys included a life-size poster of an exit door on the locker room wall at Saints headquarters. It served as a not-so-subtle reminder that finding the way out of the organization was easy for those who failed to buy into his way.

It a stunning twist, the NFL has shown Payton the door.

The move has left the Saints reeling, trying to figure out how to move forward without Payton ? at least for a year.

New Orleans has begun picking up the pieces.

A person familiar with the situation said Thursday three current assistants are strong candidates to take over in Payton's absence: Offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced its plans.

The Saints also must orchestrate a front office and coaching staff shuffle to account for partial-season suspensions of general manager Mickey Loomis (eight games) and assistant head coach Joe Vitt (six games), who also coaches linebackers.

The person said it is too early to tell who will be named interim head coach or how reassignments across both the coaching staff and front office will shake out. The person added that Payton, who has now been with the club more than six years, and Loomis, who arrived 12 years ago, still had the backing of team owner Tom Benson.

Benson "continues to stand behind his guys," the person said.

The Saints could appeal the punishment handed down by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday, but it was not immediately clear whether the Saints intended to explore that option.

New Orleans also doesn't know who they'll have on defense. The NFL still has not decided how to punish players who participated in the bounty system. The Saints may have to be ready to replace several defensive regulars for a few games.

A more immediate priority is having a plan in place to fill the voids left by Payton's suspension, which begins April 1, and the absence of Loomis. The GM will be able to oversee the draft and signings all the way through training camp, but will have to prepare his staff for his absence for the first half of the regular season.

As for Payton, his imprint and influence touched seemingly every aspect of the franchise.

The lone coach to lead the club to a Super Bowl championship has had a hand in everything from personnel decisions to the photos and slogans hanging in various meetings rooms and giant murals on the walls of the indoor practice field.

Payton has preached the importance of communication and coordination between not just the coaching staff, scouts and front office, but also the business and marketing sides of the franchise. Everyone in the building needed to be working toward the same goal.

A saving grace for the Saints could be the experience of the staff working under both Payton and Loomis, along with veteran leaders in the locker room, starting with quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees and Payton worked in lockstep, not just on the offense, but on other team-wide matters. Payton often consulted his quarterback on the mood of the locker room, and sought his input on when it might be a good idea to change routines or give players a day off.

One potential problem: Brees has said he isn't happy with the franchise tag. The Saints still hope to work out a long-term deal with Brees, if they can get closer on the money the AP offensive player of the year is seeking.

While things will definitely be different without Payton, the Saints don't have to start from scratch with his interim replacement.

The case for Carmichael:

? He took over play calling when Payton broke his leg last season in a sideline collision. The Saints went 9-1 afterward and set NFL single-season records for total yards and yards passing.

? He has been with the Saints since 2006, when Payton and Brees also arrived. Brees has often spoken of how much he likes working with Carmichael.

? He was an offensive assistant in San Diego from 2002-2005 while Brees with the Chargers.

The case for Spagnuolo:

? He is coming off a three-year stint as head coach in St. Louis.

? Before that, he was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants' 2007-08 championship team that contained Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

? He is known for bringing the kind of intensity to the sideline and locker room that Payton did.

The case for Kromer:

? He has built up a decade of NFL coaching experience after a stint in the college ranks.
