Computer forensics is a science that involves using computer or connected data in relation with a law enforcement investigation to show as evidence in court. Though computer forensics have been around as long as the computer, this filed has seen many advancements over the last few years.
When computer forensics was new, it for the most part involved data dumps and making printed copies of each key stroke in the form of an eight digit group or binary codes that use zeros and ones. It could actually take a great deal of paper to print out the keystrokes in binary code. A system analyst would then translate each of the binary groups into hexadecimals and convert these into the real value of the keystroke. When this technique was used, it could pinpoint the location which caused the computer to malfunction. Just as all other forms of technology, computer forensics has come a long way since the early days of binary code.
Though computers still apply the old binary system, the way in which the utilities are developed and operated has changed considerably. This modern field has done an excellent job in keeping track of the advanced technology. It is possible to erase and entire hard drive but if there was not kind of conditional format( and on occasion non-format)the erased data can be restored. Getting back lost data calls for a computer expert that is knowledgeable in computer forensics to restore all the information that has been erased from the hard drive.? A computer forensics specialist receives the training needed to do this kind of process.
Computer forensics can do amazing things like track down emails, instant messages, and just about nay kind of electronic communication. This technology may come in handy especially with the rise in crimes today. The technology is so advanced it can tell the time and place the email was sent and it can actually detect emails being sent in real time. It can be baffling when you think about all the emails being dispatched at all times but the technology is always evolving at a more rapid pace even the technology used for investigation.
Computer forensics is a science not thought about much of the time but it has helped humankind immensely. It has been proven to be valuable in solving criminal cases and needs to be thought of a worthwhile technology in numerous ways. For certain, the interest in this filed has increased due to television and the study of it will continue to grow for some time to come.
