Be Lifehacker's Freelance Designer [Announcements]

We're adding to our design team at Lifehacker! If you want to use your skills to help our blog communicate visually through great design, we want you hear from you.

What Is This Position?

Images in Lifehacker posts don't come out of the ether?we choose them carefully, and many posts receive special treatment from a designer so that the visuals communicate the core of the article quickly and attractively. As a freelance designer at Lifehacker, your primary task would be to create compelling images to accompany various posts day to day. You'll need to work quickly, communicate and collaborate with our writers, and create some pretty pictures.

Note: If you applied to our design internship in the past, please don't hesitate to apply to this position now. There were many promising applications, a large number of which came in after we hired someone. If you didn't hear back from us, we may have liked your work but couldn't hire you.

What You'll Need

• Be at least 18 years old. (Earlier we said you had to be in the US, but good news?you don't!)
• Your own computer.
• Adobe Photoshop (and preferably other Creative Suite apps like Illustrator)
• Good design skills and the ability to iterate quickly.
• A good work ethic and the ability to think creatively.
• The ability to both follow directions and contribute your own ideas.
• A flexible schedule that'll allow you to work on images when needed during the day. (A freelance schedule is ideal, as you'll have time to do other work.)
• Bonus points if you have a talent for illustration.

The Details

• Freelance designers are paid on a per-image basis at a rate of $15 per image. Images take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour to complete, and you'll get faster as you get the hang of how we operate.
• You'll have the opportunity to work on anywhere between 1-10 images per day, depending on the needs of the Lifehacker writers and the activity of the few other designers.
• You'll have no set schedule, but will need to manage your time well. This isn't a full time job, and it won't require many hours, but you'll need to be able to act on incoming image requests quickly. This position is best suited for someone who wants to supplement their income with fun and quick design work that offers a lot of variety.

How to Apply

We get a lot of applications and rely on Gmail to help us keep things sorted, so it's very important to follow these instructions so we don't miss yours. Here's what to do:

• Send an email to tips+designer@lifehacker.com with the subject Lifehacker Designer.
• In the email, include three (3) sentences about yourself. Being concise is important and makes for a much more effective email (plus we generally have a lot to read). In these three sentences, tell us why you think you're a good fit, what interests you about the position, why you're particularly awesome, and whatever else you want to share.
• Include a link to your portfolio(s) in the email, or a few links to samples of your work.
• Create a new lead image (640x360) for two of the following posts: Top 10 Mac OS X Tweaks, The Common Sense Guide to "Organic" and Other Food Labels, How to Avoid Awkward Conversations when Meeting Someone New, Xbox Live Traffic Light Notifies You When Friends are Gaming, and Trap Heat in Your House by Slowly Running Your Ceiling Fans Clockwise. Only choose two. Do not make an image for all of the posts. Send us links to the images you create and explain the choices you made in a couple of sentences. (If you don't have a place you like to post images, use Minus.)

We get a lot of emails, so unfortunately we can't reply to everyone. If we do contact you, it may take a week or two so please be patient. If you don't hear from us, feel free to give it another shot the next time around. If you do hear from us, you'll likely be asked to make a couple of images for upcoming posts to see how you work on a deadline.
